Saw this in Variety!
Christopher Nolan has started shooting World War II action-thriller “Dunkirk” for Warner Bros. in Dunkirk, France — site of the massive 1940 military evacuation.
“Dunkirk” will focus on the rescue through a quickly assembled British fleet of more than 800 boats, which saved more than 335,000 soldiers who had been cut off by the German Army. As the rescue was concluding, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill told Parliament, “We shall fight on beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender.”
Nolan is shooting “Dunkirk” from his own screenplay on a combination of Imax 65mm and 65mm large format film. “Dunkirk” hits theaters on July 21, 2017.
The cast includes Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy and Fionn Whitehead. The ensemble cast also includes Aneurin Barnard, Harry Styles, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden and Barry Keoghan.
The film is being produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas, who have teamed on “Interstellar,” “Inception” and the Dark Knight trilogy with Jake Myers serving as executive producer. Hoyte van Hoytema (“Interstellar,” “Spectre”) is the cinematographer.
“Dunkirk” will shoot in France, Holland, the U.K. and Los Angeles.
Might be interesting!

Something to look forward too, but why, OH WHY cast Harry Styles???????

To try and get 14 and 15 year old girls to go and see it.:)

Good point, but shows lack of faith in the production team. It should be good enough, without having to cast him in the film.
They would've been better of putting some of us Planeteers in it.

I well remember the 1950's film with John Mills, Richard Attenborough, et al. That was very atmospheric....hope this new effort will be, although I suspect big effects will be evident. To balance the dubious Mr.H Styles, at least it will have the excellent Mark Rylance, for one.

We'd spend too much time complaining to the director that the uniforms were wrong, that's not a real Matilda tank and Victoria train station is not in Dover. :)

Glad I'm not alone in these things. Costume dramas and war films often result in a monologue from me.

Cheers

Color me cautiously optimistic until proven otherwise.

At least it doesn't star Leonardo DiCaprio or Johnny Depp.

I hope whoever does the soundtrack and music keeps it simple and uses 1940 swing jazz and ballads.

Example - I was prepared to thoroughly enjoy Peakey Blinders on Acorn TV until I heard the music. It's like nails on a chalkboard. :censored:

This is not to say the music is unpleasant or unenjoyable on its own. It's actually pretty good - just not with a TV series that is set in the 1920s.

An example of how complimentary and enjoyable film music can be is Ken Burns "The Civil War" documentary.

Just my opinions folks.

All the best,
Dan

Yeah I know what you mean. My Mrs often has to endure me kicking off about anachronistic tanks or whatever.

World War II action-thriller “Dunkirk” ... will shoot in ... and Los Angeles.

Mmmmmm. I wonder how realistic it will be with the current trend towards big petroleum driven explosions, over the top action scenes where the hero is bullet and explosion proof, and completely fictionalised story lines that come out of Hollywood these days. Perhaps we might even have the US Navy or a US naval captain directing the rescue. I know I am being cynical, but I think I'll reserve my opinion.

They might let him join the ranks of the missing.

And his hair is still too long, should be short back and sides.

Could go either way: Like "Saving Private Ryan" or "Band Of Brothers" (good), or like "Pearl Harbour" or "U571" (toe-curlingly bad).

People have panned "Fury" but I actually rather enjoyed it, although the ending was very "Hollywood".

I'm afraid that the days of films like a "Bridge to far" are gone, I can see this film being nothing more than love interest, modern day attitudes and CGI fuelled clap-trap, I would love to be wrong and they give the film the poignancy in deserves.

 The old sweats will know this one...."Am I hurting you, private?" "No, Sergeant" " I should be, I'm standing on yer bleedin' 'air... GET IT CUT !"

I'm going to remain optimistic about this film, and reserve any criticism until I've seen it.
