Well this is good for my production level I forced myself to mix some putty tonight, fleshed out one of the arms, put the collar and front of the tunic. This has to be done in layers as the red tunic will be under the buckskin.

I will post some pics soon.

Just wanted to give an update. I started to put the buckskin tunic together and fill out the main body parts. I put the belt and haversack on and started the frills. I went with the long frills from some of the research pictures I have.

Looks great Ray! That must have been some finickity work doing all that fringe and simulating the motion of it. It did turn out very well though.

FYI, I had two jackets like that in high school... one in buck and one in black leather... I was a trailblazer in fashion when everyone else in Scarborough was wearing red and black lumberjackets and Kodiak shitkicker boots. Boy was I cool

Seriously though, IMO this is turning out to be one of your best pieces yet.

Thanks Colin for the encouragement. I was a little worried about the frills on the arms being too thick but in the research pics I was looking at they are actually quite thick as they intertwine, I think when I paint it I may try to simulate that. Right now I'm drawing out the designs that I will be putting on the back and front. My plan is not to paint them but actually roll out thinned putty and use a tool I made out of toothpicks to simulate the beads and stitching. Its going to be a long tedious process but hopefully work out well. This is the piece I plan to take to Chicago this year so really taking my time.

I'm thinking about redoing the arm fringe to try and make the strands thinner. It takes a bit of patience to get the right shape, after you mix the putty you leave it for an hour to harden a bit, then cut it and shape it, you really only have about an hour to get it right. That was my first attempt. Same concept but going to try to thin it down a bit. If everything goes right I will be bringing this to Chicago in the fall. Lots of work to do even before the paint, as I mentioned earlier I'm also working the native art bead work design for the back and along the arms.

the two "rocker" scratch sculpts I did a while ago (you saw Lemmy in Chicago) both had very long hair, in motion. I mixed 2 parts Greenstuff to 1 part Magic Sculpt, let it sit for 30 to 45 minutes. It was then rolled between two sheets of wax paper with a bit of talc and let sit again for a few minutes. then I cut appropriate sized pieces with the hair scribed on both sides (but not quite thru) and glued them to the head in layers (you only need one row along the seam). As the mix cured I used a blade tip to separate strips, tease them out, twist them back... whatever gave th impression of movement.

I don't know if it'll give the effect you want but it worked for me.

I will give it a try. I usually mix green stuff with aves epoxy but ran out, I will try it with miliput white, might give me a bit more control so I can thin it out a bit. What I have now is the look I'm looking for but in my mind a bit too thick.

So I changed the fringe on my mountie. I took your advice Colin and went with each individual strand and rolled the putty to shape then applied it to the figure. I apologize for the pics as I didnt take out my photo booth but just took some quick snaps.



I like this better than what I had before, now to work on the designs
