Completed Officer, von Rattsky Hussars (Poste Militaire)

Hi Folks,

Currently on my bench is a Poste Militaire 75mm figure of an Officer of von Rattsky Hussars (1708). It’s an excellent sculpt by Mike Good.



Trying to find some history of this unit proved somewhat difficult on the internet. All I was able to get was this print showing the uniform. The hat that the figure is holding belongs to the Scots Regiment of Fusiliers, an example of which is shown in the next print.



The PM instruction sheet gives an excellent description of the uniform, but no specific history regarding this unit.



The following is an extract from Osprey MAA 203 (Louis XIV’s Army).



I decided not to use the severed heads, and have incorporated the supplied base into an expanded terrain to suit my plinth.



The bits of green that are visible on the figure are remnants of plasticine which held the arms in place while the epoxy set.

Now to fill the joints, prepare some groundwork and prime.

Both mentioned figures are a joy to paint ( I, too, left off the severed heads ) Look forward to seeing Andrew's rendition of this classic. Likewise, Pilgrim's PM Hussar, after Detaille. All Ray Lamb's sculpts used to slot together beautifully, a true master.

I totally agree with you regarding the PM standard against current excellent figures.
When the PM kits first appeared they were a tad too expensive for me.
However, these days not so much, and I've managed to acquire and paint a goodly few.
I have the Conquistador waiting in the wings.

I’ve now more or less painted the groundwork.

It was first painted with Humbrol Dark Earth (#29) and when dry, washed with van Dyke Brown (oil).

The next step was a dry brush with Yellow Ochre (oil) to bring out the detail.

I then laid out various Humbrol enamel stone colours on my white tile (#84 Mid Stone, #121 Pale Stone, #187 Dark Stone, #224 Dark Slate Grey and #225 Middle Stone).

The various stones and pebbles on the base were painted randomly with these colours. Some probably were overpainted as I went along, until I thought it looked about right.

Once dry, the whole lot got washed with Sepia (oil) to blend everything together.

Finally, the larger stones were given a very light dry-brush with Humbrol Light Grey (#147) and some white where I thought appropriate.

As you can see, I’ve also made a start on base-coating the blue clothing elements using Andrea Napoleonic Blue (acrylic).
