Dark brown & black washes? the edges would start to fade into the surrounding material with darker colour in the centre (at least that's what my old Triumph used to do to my jeans!)

PS: I did this figure some years ago, it's a goody - the downcast expression makes him really look as if he wished he was elsewhere!

Thanks Dave, thats what I was thinking too but wondered if anyone had any better ideas. I agree, he has a great expression on his face.
This is my third Jon Smith figure in a row and I've got one waiting. Got a funny feeling I need to buy them all :)

Hi Roger, one of the best ways of recreating oil stains on clothing is to simulate the actual effect using paint of the right type. I'd likely do this by mixing a very dark black/brown that's still transparent, using Lamp Black and a transparent earth colour.

I'd probably use artists' acrylics, but I think oils could actually work better as you could put a dot down and then smear it just like might happen in reality, plus they should dry with a fairly natural gloss this way too. But if you're using Vallejo or something similar this isn't that easy as most of them are made to be as opaque as possible so you might try applying the effect in stages - the dark brown/black mixture in careful spot glazes and then go in with straight black for the heavier areas and drops.

Hi Roger

When you use acrylics, you can use for the oil stains the color "oil" from Gunze-Sangyo. I use the acrylics from Gunze-Sangyo for tanks and for the first paint on figures. And the metalic colors for the weapon and armor of the figures.

And I love the figures from Jon Smith, too. I have seen last year the first photos of his new projekt in 120mm, a german MG-Team with two figures. He said, he think, that this new kit would be avaiable this year. And now I am waiting and waiting and waiting and....

Thank you Ulrich. I have just come to the computer for a break from painting. I have just painted out my first attempt at an oil stain. it looked liked he had spilt paint down his trousers!
sounds like the MG team will be a good one, better start saving my money.

Roger.

Thank you to all that offered advice. I think I have now cracked it
Please don't ask how because it was a mixture of washes, dry brushing and a technique that can only be described as "splodging"

Cheers,

Rog.
