How common is it to paint your figure in acrylic then just shade or highlight with oils. What are the differrences (i.e. paint consistency) I should be aware of when compared to wet on wet.

If you mean literally to just shade and highlight with oils over an acrylic basecoat I don't remember hearing of a modeller doing this (anyone?) but the main issue would be matching the hue of the midtone with the two oil mixtures; this is not a problem to be taken lightly by most of us who have limited mixing experience, but it's certainly possible. One other potential worry that comes to mind would be the variation in finish between one medium and another, which might have to be corrected with an overcoat.

There is a technique somewhat like this used by Stefan Müller-Herdemertens to apply highlights and shadows to an enamel basecoat, using a single colour in each case - a light warm grey and an umber. This is for 1/35 scale figures where colour would be less critical than on a larger canvas, being particularly useful for highlighting and shading underpainted camo so that you don't have to tackle each colour individually. In common with most shortcuts though the technique has its limitations and this shows in the finished appearance.

Talino if you borrow a page from the Sheperd Paine book this is the most simple way to do it .I am not yet an acomplished painter  but this is the way i started .

basic acrylics usnder coats with oils shading.

But if i have learned anything in the couple of years that i have been painting .it is that ....YOU HAVE TO FIND THE TECHNIQUE THAT SUITS YOU.

lately i try to paint base coat and three. degrees of shading in acrilics and then at least three degrees in oils.

1...Base coat . 2...medium highlights..3.light shadows all in Acrilics and then to the fine workd in oils .

I feather the acrilycs and i both fethrer and blend the oils. hope this helps you ome :)
