Being inclined to cynicism I had no intention of watching much of the ceremony ....... but from start to finish I was transfixed.
Absolutely brilliant and spectacular piece of performance art, totally different from Beijing and very very British but none the worse for that. On a slightly parochial note great to see scots having such a prominent role with Evelyn Glennie, Chris Hoy to the fore and Emeli Sandes' brilliant delivery of 'Abide with Me' It makes me proud to be Scottish and British.
Good luck to all the athletes competing in what looks like its going to be a brilliant sporting occasion.
Oh! and who'd have thought the queen could have made that jump at her age. Maybe we'll get a new 120 paratrooper from Moz soon ;)

Well 2 weeks ago some kids have unassembled the small wheels, put their Goldorack Helmet and the biggest diaper they could find and then went to engorge the traffic on the road of France . Meanwhile we already had some athleatic games runing, jumping, throwing and screaming . Also at the same time ( as every 2 years ) big boys in short pants playing on the grass with a ball they are to laazy to take in hands . Now back to at letic with barbies on poneys, guys playing with bows that took so much time to assemble that you would have had the time to loose twice at Agincourt , boys and girls who jump above stick, jum with sticks, throw sticks and dishes and hammer and ...( don't let them loose in your home ) Other who will jump, 1,2,3 I won, in the sandbox and ... engorge traffic in England . Then we haves others playing with their snowraket in hand and then....
So TV show are sportssportsportsportsport
Enjoy if you like, be frustrate if you don't . Meanwhile taxes are going high, cancer and AIDS are still there, people are starving, Spain and Grece are almost collapsing but no no no 14.000.00.000€ for the games 14.000.000€ to buy a ToukhouzoValesianese frootball player . No No ... don't think by yourself... we give you Panem and Circenses .
But again, if you like , enjoy
by the way I made lot of sport but never looked sport .

For the most part, I feel the same as you regarding the olympics, I live in a city that hosted the games twice and saw what it did to small businesses in the areas around where the events were held, but I think we need something to take our minds off all the sh!t of every day life and as a show, the London opening ceremonies were pretty brilliant!

Perfectly legitimate view Michel.....Bread and Circuses........ surely choice remains I'm not particularly aware of compulsion, I'll try and think for myself.
I'll be watching only what I choose from whats on offer.....Oh I'll be watching the Paralympics too.

I hadn't really intended to make a political statement or indeed what appears to have been taken an endorsement for justifying diverting focus and investment from national economic crises, AIDS and cancer and global starvation. I was merely commenting on what I thought was a brilliant piece of entertainment, so I apologise for breaching the intention and spirit of the non political nature of the Lounge:notworthy: .
War is a waste of money, Poverty is a result of waste of money. The arms race is a waste of money. International events including sporting events are not necessarily so. Like others the Olympics provide an opportunity for nations, participants and viewers to engage in what should be a peaceful endeavour.
OK the games like the World Cup, the Tour de France etc are media events but is that ultimately a bad thing if it gives young people the opportunity to see people from many nationalities proudly and fairly representing the best of their countries. It might also inspire a new generation to participate in sport and activity.
Is it then such a bad thing ?

You seem very frustrated person. I understand we are not living in the perfect world. Maybe all those money would help to repair the world, but first of all we all have to united. And I believe the Olympic Games is the only time when it happens. You could always try to put a manifest against military research where every country spend millions of more just to find a more accurate weapons to take life away instead of helping cure it.

You do not have to complain that you cannot find anything interesting in the TV during the games. Life has got so much more to offer than just watching TV. If you are interested in news watch it in the Internet, where you can select anything that matches your interest, not the all crap that is served by TV.

Do we really have to complain about the Olympic Games?

Anything that includes the singing of Jerusalem or I Vow the Thee My Country gets my vote. Good luck to the athletes but fie on the flag wavers! That being said, I know a lot of folks enjoy the competitions and I hope they enjoy them.

We have the same taste in hymns Colin.:angelic:;)
If you don't like the games, and can't find anything on TV, think of all the painting time you'll have.

Carl - seeing the benefits already....I got most of a Tommy's War 54mm done today and started Moz's freebie hussar while the rest of the world grinds to a halt watching the jocks.

Maybe its more a result of having a new studio set up for the controlling shareholder and myself. She paints on canvas while I do my little men. I'm far more productive when I can leave everything out and when she is around working on her stuff (the honey do list gets forgotten when she's painting).

Plus I have Netflix :D

I enjoyed it despite my cynical view to start with, excellent performance all round and a fine spectacle. If nothing else it was worth watching my young lads entranced face

Well I am a bit Miffed to say the least. Living in the Dominican Republic I thought I would be able to watch the opening ceremony and selcted video clips on the internet via the BBC website. But guess what 'sorry this video feed not available in your area'. And nothing on the Sky channels here. Bah!! I am not a particularly athletic person but like to watch others work up a sweat but by the time I see any of it the games will be over.

I agree with Piotrec... Certainly I won't see much of the games, but I guess it's a good thing, but like everithing else it has pros and cons.
As a Pink Floyd fan I must say that the last verses of the music that was played during the fireworks are very explicit about what's going on in the world, I don't if the music was put there to play by purpose or just one that was good for that effect, anyway it says: "Everything under the sun is in tune, But the sun is ecplipsed by the moon". Think for yourself. I guess it stood there very well, great message, great shout to the world to open eyes...so maybe the games aren't just a futility. We have to respect those who enjoy there life as athletes as we like to paint...glad we are all different. This don't mean that I'm unaware of whats happening, Portugal isn't exactly in a good shape...

Regards
Pedro
