I've fished this fella out from somewhere near the back of the third shelf down in my cabinet. One of my favourite Romans in any scale and by any company, I painted him about 12 years ago (maybe more) and I was really proud of him at the time.
I’m less proud of him now (a) because I’ve seen some phenomenal versions of him that knock mine into the proverbial cocked hat and (b) my own painting has improved since, and there are aspects of it that I’d do different now than I did back then. But I’m not ashamed of him either, so I thought I’d give him an airing on here.
I did briefly toy with the idea of maybe revisiting him and retouching the bits I’m not overly happy with, but in the end I decided I can't be bothered.
I cheated a bit on the shield, there’s no fancy freehand going on, it’s just Andrea decals painted over. Also no idea whether the colour of it is “historically accurate” or not. I just wanted a change from the red that everyone and his dog does.
