Hi Guys
I'm wanting to improve my painting of 5óclock shadow.
I use a wash of Paynes grey(I generally use oils or oil enamel mix) but I'm wanting to improve this.
I've follow Mark(Gothic Geek)s'in progress and am interested in his techniques or similar,I note he manages to get the individual hairs,(when I try it its a disaster)tips please.

Regards

Chris

Try using an older brush with small, soft bristles and apply the Payne's Grey with a light stippling motion. Put the paint on the brush and then wipe it off on a clean cloth before applying lightly to the figure's face.

Very fine brush tip (not necessarily a tiny brush) and practice. If your main problem is hand control there are some prior threads with tips on steadying that might help, and practising can make a big difference in success with this kind of things since confidence can play a big part in how well it can turn out.

I think stippling is actually the best method to simulate something like the texture we can see IRL, and it's far more forgiving too :)

I always stipple my chosen colour using an old cut down brush. I use oils and one tip I can offer is this, if you want a dark shadow work wet on dry, if lighter/more subtle then work wet on wet.
Hope this helps.

Cheers
