This is one of my favorite paintings done by Edouard Jean Baptiste Detaille in my collection. I am collecting the battle paintings mainly from Franco-Prussian war.
This painting shows Pierre-Jules Soufflot de Magny et de Palotte with captured Portuguese flag.

Pierre-Jules Soufflot de Magny et de Palotte (1793-1893) - Lieutenant Lancers of the Imperial Guard (May 22, 1815). Born December 13, 1793. In 1809 at age 15 joined the military service, 26 January 1810 - 20th Regiment (20e regiment de chasseurs-a- cheval), under the command of Colonel (Jean-Baptiste-Alexandre Cavrois), then Colonel (August-Francois-Joseph Lelievre de La Grange) took part in the fighting in Spain and Portugal, distinguished himself in the battle of ( Fuentes-de-Ornoro), in December 1811 transferred to the 13th Regiment, and in May 1812 returned to the 20th Regiment on 12 July 1812 in the battle of (Guarda) in the valley of Mondego (Valee de Mondego ) commanded a platoon escort Marshal Marmont (Auguste-Frederic-Louis-Viesse de Marmont) and captured the Portuguese flag. He took part in the Russian campaign of 1812 with the II-th army corps of Marshal (Nicolas-Charles Oudinot), fought at Polotsk, Borisov, and the Berezina, Saxon and French campaigns in 1813 and 1814 he fought under the command of Colonel Surdu (Jean-Baptiste- Joseph Sourd) as part of the II-nd Cavalry Corps under General Sebastiani (Horace-Francois-Bastien Sebastiani de la Porta) at Katzbach, Leipzig , Hanau, Montmirail and Monterau. During the "100 days" promoted May 22, 1815 with the appointment of a lieutenant in the regiment of the Guards Lancers (Lanciers de la Garde Imperiale), participated in the Battle of Belgium, after the defeat at Waterloo left the army and joined the Corps of maritime traffic ( Compagnie des messageries maritimes). He died June 2, 1893 in Paris at the age of 99 years. Chevalier of the Legion of Honor (12 February 1813), Commander of the Legion of Honor (18 December 1891). The author of "Memoirs» (Souvenirs), published in 1888.

This is just my favourite sort of subject and is on my list to make as model.
