Hello everyone!

My name is Spyros , I am from Greece and this is my first post in this forum.

This figure it's painted with oils, like all of my figures so far..
I know acrylics is the new trend (well ..not so new...) but i am ..addicted to oils because of their attributes: easier blending , color depth, drying time..

the truth is i don;t like very much the satin -shinny sometimes- effect , (especially when you' re dealing with wwII subjects) and that;s a good reason to turn in to acrylics. (now that i have my Jo Jojna's order delivered!!!)

I hope some day to post a figure completely painted with acrylics because i ve ;seen what you can achieve if you know how to use them!!!

but 'till that day
i would like to share with you my version of Pegaso's 90mm crusader, painted as a knight hospitaller 13th c.

I would also like to thank the well-known on this forum Christosjager for his help on this subject. Thanks Chris!!

Your thoughts and comments are welcome !

Kind Regards
Spyros

Spyros,
If i see how you paint this figure you should stay with the oils. You are creating great painted figures with it.
There are alot of tricks to get to oils as flat as acrylic.

marc

haha!! good one!
Thank you Marc! Thank you very much!

i am waiting for your magic tricks!!
The truth is i am looking for some finishing product that is completely matt
but i haven;t found anything yet!

There is one in Korea or Japan i think is called Zukei Mura but they dont do shipping in Greece..

you have some alternative?
(besides heating)

Hey Spyros,

Excellent painting and one of my favourite period.

I also paint in oils although I do use acrylics on rare occasions (mostly when I think I can get away without others realising too much that I botched the job).

One medium that I found can considerably matt down oil paints, is Vallejo's Model Air Flat Varnish. I apply this by brush (since it is acrylic and already thinned down, it does not leave any brush marks) and I personally find that it does the job.

Mind you, if an oil paint is more "oily";) or has linseed oil added to it, then it may take more than one layer to achieve the matt effect. You need however to watch out so as not to tone down shadows / highlights.

Hope this helps.(y)

i was browsing in PF and suddenly my eye catched this ........awesome painting !!
προσκηνω φιλε μου , πολυ ωραιο βαψιμο!

Hi Spyros, wonderful job on a great figure!
I often use oils as I'm still learning acrylic techniques. I put my paints on a piece of cardboard (the brown type used for boxes) and a lot of the oil drains away, leaving them still workable but with much less 'sheen.' Give it a try:)
Looking foward to seeing more of your great work.
Mary

Hello and wellcome Spyros.

i'm acrylicadict but often i use oils and i love them. i think that in the middle point is the equilibrium.

you did a very great work with this piece. nice work with the red. To reduce the brightness you could mix the oils mixed with enamel

Πολύ ωραίο βάψιμο κι αν δεν κάνω και λάθος υπάρχει αφιέρωμα για την συγκεκριμένη φιγούρα στο βιβλίο (Scale model Handbook figure Modeling 2);)
