Einion,
Thanks on the purple. I tried with my 75mm Alexander and fell short of the mark. I am much happier with the results here.
As for the hair, if you can find a reference I'd be very interested to see it. I did some searching for information but it was far from exhaustive. I've seen pictures of the wax representation... though I wonder if the dark hair was chosen because it looked more Greek or because they had some actual source.
In the end I based the hair color on that of Alexander. The references about his appearance all are centuries after his death, so I can't say they can be 100% trusted. But most seem to point towards blond hair for Alexander. I also figured the Greeks viewed Macedonians as non-Greek and thus the blond hair might give him more of a foreign look.
Aelian in Varia Historia
"They say that the most amiable and beautiful amongst the Greeks was Alcibiades; amongst the Romans, Scipio. It is reported also that Demetrius Poliorcetes contended in Beauty. They affirm likewise that Alexander Son of Philip was of a neglectful handsomness: For his Hair curled naturally, and was yellow; yet they say there was something stern in his countenance."
From Callisthenes
"For he had the hair of a lion and one eye was blue; the right one was heavy lidded and black, and the left one was blue; and his teeth were sharp as fangs, and he looked upon a defensive attack the same as a lion would."
Of course he could be describing the look/style rather than the color.
So, my choice was not entirely random... but it certainly relys heavily on guess work. If Making Faces references sources that give a description of Philip I would love to hear about them. Thanks for the feedback. I doubt my figures will ever be 100% accurate but that is my goal. I appreciate your input.
