Richie. A less accurate but more simply option would be yo buy plastruct plastic dowel, paint it brass and then slice it into appropriate lengths. A black dot at the end of each would show it spent. Maybe better in 54mm but could be useful in your scale too.

Colin

Hi Colin,
Cheers, I am going to give something a try and see how I get on.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for looking in mate always nice to have you on board.
cheers
Richie

Hi Richie
Sorry to hear the about the loss of your dad , but yes what a wonderful tribute this project will be to him .
I will be following this project with great interest and I love the concept the amount of figures closely packed together will add to drama of that day .Also it's a subject close to my heart as i am a taff and my dad was in the South Wales Borderers , was not there though, lol
All the best mate
Cheers Chris

Richie

Hi Roger,
Thanks mate(y)

I'd use florists wire Richie trimmed to size and sprayed brass I used it to make 9mm cases for Steve Readdie's Arnhem Para figure... Of course I then carefully pressed them into a muddied base ground work and you can hardly see them but I know they are there DAMN IT!

Hi mate, good to see this all pulling together now mate with addition of further figures, you will learn an immense amount from this project once complete.
I think whatever method of making spent cases its going to involve a certain amount of time and patience, I would go for some brass tube, nearest you will get is either 1mm or 1.5 mm, good thing its easily cut with a sharp blade in this scale and will already be brass so no need to paint, will also be hollow.

catch you later mate
Steve

Hi Richie,

Coming in late to this one. Sorry about the loss of your Dad. Always been fascinated by the Zulu War ever since I saw Zulu for the first time. This is a really awesome (and ambitious:)) project. It's certainly looking pretty good to date. I can only admire the speed you work at. At my rate of production 20-21 120mm figures would take 20-21 years!

Hi Pete,
Welcome and you are not late mate, I still have loads to do. But now I am back at work things might slow a little, but I had a plan and a cracking start, so I just got stuck in! Saying that I am aiming to get 3 or 4 converted figures to the undercoat stage by the end of this weekend. As for Zulu me and you both mate(y).
cheers
Richie

Hi Steve, Steve and Mark,
Thanks for the ideas very much appreciated.
cheers
Richie

Ive just had a thought Richie, you said you will be using 20 to 21 figures, but where are you going to position the 4000 Zulu's

Brian

Hi Brian,
The 4,000 will be positioned in the living room if she ever leaves me, she might say it looks that now..........:wacky:
cheers
Richie

Hi All,
Here are the next two figures, two Zulu's attacking the wall and their position of attack. Eight down:), only thirteen to go to this stage:facepalm:
cheers

1/35th turned brass shell cases work, that's if you can find something suitable.
Going to be impressive Richie.(y)

Hi Carl,
I searched for about two hours trying to find 1/35 scale 50 cal. spent ammo as per the picture above or something similar and drew a blank, any leads??? Thanks for the thumbs up mate.
cheers
Richie

Richie

Could I make a suggestion, how about some of those mealie bags being split open with the contents spilling out ?

Hi Brian,
Good suggestion, I was actually thinking about splitting a couple as they are still quite pliable. Keep throwing ideas in(y)
cheers
Richie

WOW Mate,
I miss a day and you have half the regiment tucked inside the mealie bags.
You are really on the move Richie, very nice progress but I'm with Brian 'Zulus thousands of 'em' where do they go?
You need a contingency plan.....and quick.
All the best Mate,
Keith

Sorry to hear of your loss, my parents died within 36 hours of each other on 11/13 December and the funeral was on Xmas Eve...it was not an easy time...and I miss them terribly but time is a healer. Cancer is a vile thing, your dad is no longer suffering.

My dad had terminal cancer and my mum Altzhiemers - both are at peace and not suffering anymore - I know where you are at.

I am so looking forward to seeing your dio, it is looking great so far.

I wish I could work as fast as you... I was starting a multi fig dio in November (some Airfix conversions and a mix of scratch built with Historex parts) for what I have palnned at the rate I'm going, it should be done sometime during the year I retire... 2029!

How the hell do you churn them out this frigging fast?

Colin the Slow

Hi Keith,
Well you have been very busy on your own projects.:) I think by this weekend is out I'll have a few more to this stage.

Hi Adrian,
Thank you for your support and my condolences to you, I cannot imagine what that double blow was like to you.
Glad you like my efforts so far.(y)

Hi Colin,
The secret is.............................................Chimps can multi task........................................they can use hands and feet at the same time:D. I knew from planning this how I wanted each figure and what their role would. Then it was a mental note on how to change each figure and press on, I must say one or two which I am working on in the background are a little bit more difficult, imparticularly the one's in the firing position.
I've also had some great help and advice to overcome a few things, so that helps keep you up to speed.

Should have another update tonight hopefully.
cheers
Richie
