As I have two horses that are cracked above the pin ( a resin and a metal horse) I really wanna know how to pin a horse leg without breaking above the pin.
Who knows how???

Marc

Cut a channel on the inside of the leg from the hoof to the top of the leg near the body. Insert your wire and epoxy in place, then cover the wire with putty and sand to shape. Hope this gets the point across. Wish I could take credit but I learned that from someone else, cannot recall who.

I remember this may be from the old Campaign magazine or Military Modelling. I did a quick SBS to show how this is done.

Cut a channel from the hoof to the top of the leg near the body by using a Dremel tool. Please wear a mask and eye protection.

Insert a piece of music wire bend to fit and epoxy the wire into place. Then cover the wire and channel with epoxy putty and sculpt and sand to match the shape.

To prevent a rearing horse from sagging on its rear legs. Extend the channel up and pass the body.

Extend the wire to the inside of the body. Bend the wire to rest on the inside of the body. If the body is a solid casting, cut out a channel and epoxy the wire to inside of the body.

Cover the wire inside the body with a lump of epoxy putty or soldering the wire for white metal casting.

Thanks guys,

If I understand it correct, you must open the leg to insert the pin??
Then resculpt the leg.
How is it done with a horse leaning on his backlegs??

Marc

Yes, you must cut open a channel on the leg and insert the pin into the channel then cover the pin and channel with putty and resculpt.
With a horse leaning or sagging on his back legs refer to my second part of SBS.

Felix

for sure you need to have pin that arrive till the body of the horse. you cannot make hole only until the knee of the horse.

all my horse has at least 2 pins in their legs.

I drill an hole ( a lot of patience, lot of lubrication and a low speed with a dremel )

when the leg is bent the cut at the height of the knee. after inserting the pin I rebuild the part of the knee

I think that Ivo's way is the easiest way to do it properly.
Also, caliber of the pin is very important and I would avoy brass and go with steel...or titanium if you can find some

I use different metals to pin my horses, when I have 2 legs on the field Brass or copper are ok. Consider that I weld my pins and brass can be welded better than steel

when my horses is flying on a single leg steel is necessary to avoid later damaging

For pins: K&S music wires
For white metal soldering: CARR's 70 Low temperature solder and flux
For lubricating white metal drilling: a dab of lacquer thinner will give a smoother and faster cut
