A couple of threads this week on the subject of pirated figures have ended up turning rather heated, with insults, insinuations and general unpleasantness being traded. So much so that I took it upon myself to close one of them down because it was getting out of hand (not something I did lightly or with any pleasure).

What these discussions have done however is show that members' opinions are divided as to whether or not direct links to pirate figure sellers' eBay listings are a good idea.

The "official" rules of the site as laid down by its "founding father" Gordy 4 years ago are that no such links should be posted, because that effectively amounts to free advertising for recasters, besides making their knock-off products easier and quicker to locate than they otherwise would be.

The opposing view is that such links help identify pirate sellers and that pirate sellers will always exist anyway, so posting a link makes no difference.

Unfortunately this whole argument came to a head with a long-standing and valued pF member leaving, and one of the reasons he gave for doing so was that the forums are no longer "democratic" and that the "pirate links question" should have been put to a vote. So let's take a vote. And the question is:

Should we allow/encourage the posting of links on pF to pirate recasters' eBay listings?

Yes or No ?

A one word answer is all that's needed. No lengthy treatises please, with lengthy explanations for or against. They will be deleted (apologies if that comes across as high-handed or "undemocratic" but this thread is intended as a vote as suggested by Keith, not a discussion. Plus we don't want it degenerating into another flame war).

So just a one word answer please: Yes or No.

I'll leave the poll open for a couple of weeks to (hopefully) see which general direction the wind's blowing among members.

To start the ball rolling, I'm voting No.

Very difficult to answer this
If the question is " Should we allow/encourage the posting of links on pF to pirate recasters' eBay listings?" the answer can only be NO
If the question was "Should we point out the recaster adress as a place to avoid ?" the anwer is YES

But as, today, 99% of buy are made via the net, as people make a search on e-bay to find the cheaper resellers, I mean here official ones , because some resellers take less margin than others ( and cheaper sending cos) and everybody knows the average price of the market for a piece, they also know, intresequaly, that to cheap is a recast, or a piracy or a trap . They use their good sense, they know perfectly well when they are buying piracy, so for those few "xxxx peoples", the definitive answer is NO don't help them, don't make it even more easy to find such adresses. Report those adresses to the official maker and/or to e-bay .

I'm taking this as a "No"

If in addressing a problem and for discussion: Yes!
As promoting the recaster: Hell, no!

I'm taking this as a "Yes"

I don't think that anyone on either side of the argument is in favour of deliberately promoting recasters.

It should be obvious that the question relates only to whether or not posting links is a good idea with regard to highlighting the problem of piracy.

Come on guys - stick to one word answers please!!

Its very difficult question to amswer yes or no, as is stated in a couple of previous comments. While you don't wish to promote these pirates, yet you want to raise awareness.

I think the real question is do YOU buy recasts? (Thats not directed at anyone specifically)!

The thing is, they only exist because folks buy counterfeit products, pure and simple!
If you don't buy from these people, you remove the revenue source. They cease to operate.

So a message to anyone who has bought products from these people, YOU are part of the problem!

Carl

NO
Send the link to the company that is having their products pirated. Then if that company wishes to let the PF community aware of the problem then it is up to them. (But I don't think they would do that for obvious reasons)

Barrie.

No
The manufacturer is the only one that has any say with Ebay officially.
In affect it is their problem therefore they should decide if it is to be visible on the forum.
Anything else is promotion, intended or not.
This still retains generic conversation on recasting.
Other forums discourage links to all EBay listings (not being suggested here)
