As I have said before I like researching the military careers of family members, friends and family of friends and representing them in model form.
So far I have made my father (bust and full figure), my mother (bust and full figure), my father in law (bust), my maternal grandfather (bust), two of my wife’s great uncles (one bust and one full figure), my best man’s father (bust), a friend father (bust) and one of my great uncles.…….
and there are more to do.
But in the meantime I’m working on my paternal grandfather, Arthur Groom, private, serial number 200273, 4th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Served in Gallipoli and Palestine.
Im not good enough a sculptor to make their faces exact representations but I do choose heads that have the correct shape face nose etc.
The bust is 1/6 scale. Its core is tin foil and wire covered in Super Sculpy to get the correct shaped former and baked. I then use Milliput to begin to flesh out the shape, using Magic Scuplt for the final detail.
I’ve chose to represent Arthur in Palestine, 1917 and he’s wearing the collarless grey back shirt and 1914 pattern leather equipment
The head is by DiD, the Wolesley helmet from Tony Barton, the SMLE from Forge Miniatures who produced a great range of printed firearms, the modelling putties from either Elgreco or Sylmasta.
