Following on from Carls sbs on sculpting a head and his bust one also I found myself enjoying it so much that I have decided to see if I could push myself further with the sculpting.
What I have done so far is a leg of a highlander using magic-sculpt on a wire armature. The other leg has also been started, but to make sure that I am going in the right direction with this I am hoping that you will give me some feedback good or bad on what I have done so far.Scale is 120mm. Like I said, whatever your thoughts are, fire away.

Barrie,

Looks pretty good so far - if I was going to be Mr. Picky, I would say that maybe the kneecap is a touch too high, perhaps a couple of mm lower?

Hi Barrie, this is coming along nicely. I think you are getting to the stage where you need a good anatomy book. The two that were recommended to me were Artistic Anatomy by Jeno Barcsay and Anatomy for the Artist by Paul Richer. These are pretty much the best, but the Barcsay book has the edge being spiral bound so you can leave it open to work from.
You've made a good start with the leg and it's good that you've left plenty of armature wire top and bottom, but what I think might be a good idea for you is to sculpt a basic figure in bits i.e. head, legs chest , trunk and arms, then make simple press moulds from the parts. That way, when you want to do a figure, you can just press out a blank in magicsculpt that you can animate to give yourself a good head start.
Hope this helps, best wishes, Gary.

That looks bloody good Barrie,

Hi Barrie,
I've been missing your input to Carl's sbs, and it's therefore very nice to see you progressing so well.

Cheers,
Andrew

Looks very good. Sculpting in components like this may make final assembly with sound anatomy more difficult. I think a full body armature or major components pinned together with wire are more the norm. You will need to be careful with positioning but the skill and accuracy sure seems to be there. One of the benefits of this site is that it gets all of us to push harder.

Range Rat, thanks for the vote of confidence but I am a long long way away from being a sculptor. Just trying to put into practice what the other PF members have been willing to share on here.

Just a couple of quick pics to show the pose I am aiming for, slightly hunched forward with his weight on the right leg and the pike resting on his right shoulder. Head turned slightly to the left. Will be using a different head from the one in the pics.
Do please shout out if you think the pose doesn't work.

I was never very good at pottery at school, never any good at sculpting either, although I could draw. I could copy pictures but thats as far as it went. The dark arts are a mystery to me.
Will follow this one Barrie.

Cheers
Bob
