Not happy with my first go. So he’s parked for a bit until I can get my morale repaired. Just got this great set in the mail. Perry 28mm “The Duellists.”

Shame about the Para, still it's best to sit back a while and subconsciously prepare for the next go.

Perry Minis are great and you have done a great job with these, after drinking a soldiers favourite past time, fighting!

Cheers Simon

Just to clarify…that’s Alan Perry’s painted example. I won’t be starting these until my para is done. I can’t work on multiple projects in parallel and ensure things get finished. Just taking a few days off to recover from Denison fatique.

FYI I tried inks but they didn’t work. Then I tried a glazing fluid but I didn’t like the eggy finish.

I’ll crack the code.

Colin

Back at it after several weeks of being AWOL with Dennison frustration. This still has a long way to go. After I am happy with the base and green, I need to add the brown transparency.

I think I will hit the finished smock with a dry brush of diluted tan to pull everything together and get that weather beaten veteran look that many surviving smocks exhibit.

It is really coming together, for what should be a simple camouflage pattern, just a bloke with a wide brush and two colours on yard after yard of cloth. Having painted a few in 1/35th I know it's not that simple, but you have captured the brush stroke pattern really well.

Cheers Simon

Thanks for the encouragement Simon.

Nice progress, he's full of character.
I was looking at the pictures before I read the text and when I got to the real one I was thinking "I think dry brushing might be a good way to get that realistic finish..." then I saw that's what you plan to do! I have been using the MIG oil brushers a lot for this kind of effect when building 1/32 aircraft. They do some good dust and earth colours - I think their "dusty earth" would be a good choice here. They are oil paints but are a ready to use liquid consistency. I find that if you decant some on to a palette and then use a large soft brush to apply them you can get a very subtle weathered effect. You have to make sure there is only a tiny amount on the brush. They give a much more subtle effect than dry brushing acrylics.

Thanks very much Nigel. Great advice. I am in a well stocked hobby shop next w/e and will have a look see.

Denison progress. I like the dry brush effect. I found that Golden Pro artists’ acrylics are translucent so I did the brown overlay camo in that. Then dry brush in base lightened with unbleached titanium to get a weathered faded look. Not done yet but I’m happy where it’s going. Dirtied him up a bit but still need to add some conte crayon powders.

Ohhhh, was my first reaction, that looks like a proper job (no not the Cornish beer). Really like this Colin, it's awesome and not finished yet!

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon. added the broken sten barrel, painted his wings, started roughing in the groundwork today. The bricks will be roughed up after the glue is dry, using a carbide scraper. They’re sculpey.

Thanks Nap. Almost a month of Denison terror over come by putting my head down and pushing on.

Damn. After looking at Richie’s metallic version I realize I have glued the wrong end of the broken sten barrel to the SMG. I will be correcting that. I presumed the sight was at the front of the barrel.
