Damian,
I can only speak for myself, but when I start in on the oils, I am using so little paint to cover that it tends to show the underpainting through the thin coats of oils. In addition, some of the oils are quite translucent (see-through) and this also plays into account when painting the oils. Again, I have seen a differnce on some of my pieces when the acrylics underneath are not smooth and evenly painted. HTH,

Yep.

Because you will be applying a VERY thin layer of oils over the acrylic (or enamel!) base, any flaw on those will be visible with your oils.

Smooth is good. ;)

You certainly can apply with an AB if you want. I don't. I use several thin coats of acrylic paint applied with a quality brush.

Also, I will prime the figures before the acrylic base is applied. That coat too must be nice a smooth.
