Great work so far....remind me of the story of our country, specially Anne Frank.
But it has to be told...
Gonna follow this closely.
And for the color: the only touch would in my opinion the yellow star.

In our profession we will call that a sunday arm.:lol:

Hi, Carl:

I've felt for a very long time this hobby lacks historical integrity, especially in WWII subjects. With the focus so heavily tilted toward idealized subjects that gloss over the depravities committed, honest depictions of the full breadth of the war have been few and far between. Your vignette is truly exceptional and goes a long way to redress that imbalance.

As for the black and white scheme, I think it's poignant, but if you were to add color, I'd suggest just the Star of David and the Nazi eagle as one way to go.

This is great Carl. Very impressive, particularly in black and white.
I likethe other's suggestion of a hint of colour. I would go for the yellow.
Maybe another suggestion: placing the german slightly higher will make him stand out and look down on his victims. Whatever you decide to do, this will make a great piece.

Hard not to moved by this scene Carl. Reminds me of the great boxed diorama that won BOS at Euro in 2009 by John and Roberto.

It's like a scene straight out of Schindlers List. More importantly, a scene straight out of real history.

Keep going mate, this is a special project, and I'll be keen to see your next update.

Dear Carl,

it is always very difficult for me - as a German - to wirte anything on such subjects.

But in this case I can say that I find your brilliant idea for very good and the black-and-white painting for absolute adequate.

Maybe you should take up Hendryks proposal, and paint the teddy bear brightly - this would strengthen in my opinion the dramatic of this vignette very much.

Basically I think a very good development that the trend to show "German heroes" - particularly SS members - seems to decrease.

And I am glad about the fact that with "Storm Child", "Arbeit macht frei", "Warsaw 1939" and - yes! - also your new Vignette slowly another view of the things during the second world war has come.

My two cents - keep the B&W throughout - no colour. A dash of colour wouldl remind me of those recent B&W TV commercials where they splash in some colour to show off new visual effects technologies.... and of course Schindler's List. Far more effective just to replicate some of those vintage B&W photos one sees of such scenes.

A super piece of art. I'm 50/50 on the splash of colour. If you do, IMHO keep it to a minimal. A timely counterpoint to some of the work produced today. Well done, I can't praise it more.

Carl that's one great diorama choice and up to your normal high standard .
If it was my choice I would paint the Stars yellow and all of the flesh area of the child .
How are you finding it only painting in shades of black and white as there is an old western theme of thought about doing once or twice .

Here’s a little update. I've shortened the legs and arms on the little girl, but I think the heads a little large and old. But it'll have to do, as my conversion skills aren't up to chopping that about. I don't know whether to deepen the red on the coat.

Looking good Carl, I would leave the coat as it is but would seriously think of trying to find another head for the reasons you mentioned.

Carl - the head of the boy looks okay for me.
The face of the girl can remain of course also, but she looks clearly older than six years.

This age was at that time important, because since 1. September 1941 all Jewish people who were older than six years had to carry on order of the Nazi authorities this damned yellow star.

This is just a brilliant piece of art.

Yes it is a sensitive subject but you have captured the mood and pain of the time beautifully, without it being distasteful.

I love the black and White idea, along with the red coat, the whole thing is full of feeling.
