Super job Robert & really like how this has finished up.
Looking like one of your best mate.
What’s aspect are you most happy with on this Dutchman?
MikeTheKiwi

Thank you very much Mike!
To me it is the overall appearance I am most satisfied about. All the different camo and equipment that is complementary to the attitude I wanted to portray.

RJ

Just got out of the rabbit hole in time…

Research is minefield of unexpected dangers, far too easy to be lead down paths you never imagined existed and one soon forgets the original goal.of the research!

I don't have a particular stand point on my country's Colonial past, it happened and provided a lot of the material I love to model. Sometimes though you have to question the choice of some of the enemies we made, unarmoured spear weilding tribesmen and we still struggled. The very least one can say about the Aboriginals, Maoris and many African peoples is that they were brave and determined people and didn't deserve the treatment they recieved. Shame the lessons of history never really get learnt.

Cheers Simon

Today is Remembrance of the Dead (Dutch: Dodenherdenking)
Remembrance Day is held annually on May 4 in the Netherlands. It commemorates all civilians and members of the armed forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since the beginning of the Second World War.

I remember Johannes Hijlkema, brother of my grandmother and my mothers uncle.
He died at the age of 22 while serving on the submarine O16 near Singapore during a war patrol.

Excellent work so far.

Malc

Thanks for you support Malc.

Hi Robert

Well adding the hair etc has certainly got the Aboriginal look , nice tribal scars as well on the torso

Bring on those paints

Have fun at the bench

Nap

Thanks Nap. Hope it turns out well.

Wow, very cool (y)

Thanks Nigel! Hope you like the Gurney book.

Great sculpt, especially like his physique, not the normal six pack and big pecks that a lot of sculptors seem to prefer.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon. I try to portray common people and soldiers with my minatures. Context and timeframe is also important. Not much bodybuilders in the times I try to portray.

Robert this is going to be a treat! Following with interest.

Oda.

PS: Rick Scollins remains one of the most inspiring and influential illustrators of all times.

Thanks Oda, for your support.
Agreed, Scollins was a great historical artist.

First paint and sketchwork..

Thanks guys!

Nap, reference for the war paint is pretty vague. Mostly red or white with all kind of patterns imaginable. Hope someone wants to do an Osprey style book on the subjects identifying all the tribes with their appearance, weapons and shields.

Studied a lot of photos and made a interpretation of how it could have been. I don’t do artistic license lightly, so I hope to do it justice.
