The diameter of the head is greater front to back than side to side. Most helmets are more or leass round, and will therefore have a greater overhang at the sides than at the front and rear. In addition, helmets are not designed to sit close to the head, but to have a liner between helmet dome and head, to help absorb any blows. If you look at re-enactors wearing helmets you will see a variation in helmet fit and overhang.

It looks fine without the left arm, but would look better with the left arm holding a shield, mounted on a pedestal.

Best wishes,

Mike

Hi Markus, thanks for your comments. I'm darkening the lion pelt after having done some more research prompted by your comments. Thanks.

Yes the head does seem rather small when you compare the width of the shoulders and the size of the upper torso. Apart from remove the head and replace it with a new one, there's not much I can do about it.

Thanks Marcel, I'm glad you like my progress so far.

Hi Mike, thanks for your comments on helmets and your opinions on the bust. I had thought to add a shield but decided against it.

Very nice Tony, I have also a signifer to painting and is always good to see different references special on the lion fur.

Regards

Hi Mike,

No I haven't given up on this bust, however I haven't made much progress lately.

It's so hot I just can't spend any time in my hobby room, which is like an oven. To make matters worse, my air conditioner stopped working yesterday and it will take at least 2 weeks for someone to come round and repair it.

I can attest to Tony comments, its around 36 degrees celcius here in Perth and very, very humid. I tried to do a bit of painting yesterday and it didnt go too well due to the heat, almost stuffed up an almost finished figure. Just have to wait until it cools down.

Hi guys,

No progress to report on the Signifer bust I'm afraid.

I haven't set foot in my hobby room for over a month, its just been too hot to paint.

I've been away from the Planet for the past 3 weeks due to my ISP suspending my account, without telling me. Lots of swearing at Indian call centre tech support people and purchasing a new laptop and two new modems later, and I'm finally back on the Planet. All my best wishes to my modelling brethren in Christchurch, New Zealand

Now all I need to do is unclog my paint bottles and get back into the hobby room.

Foxwood Miniatures should be releasing this in the reasonably near future, so you may get to buy one for yourself.

Hey Tony, I was already missing your posts and now fully understand the reason.
A reminder of how thin the line to the internet actually is and what an annoyance it is if you are cut off. Welcome back to the planet!

Cheers,
Adrian

Hi guys,

It's almost a year since I started work on this awesome bust, and it's been bugging me for some time that it remained unfinished on my workbench.:whistle::whistle::eek::eek::eek:

Now that I have my modelling juices flowing again, I've decided to resume painting and will try to finish it.(y)

I've repainted the face and darkened the lion pelt. The next step will be to concentrate on the armor.

I'm surprised that I haven't seen any other versions of this bust on pF over the past 12 months. Has anyone else done it, and if so do they have any pics to show me for inspiration?:notworthy::notworthy:

Anyway enough of my rambling nonsense, here are the latest pics. It may not look very different from 12 months ago, but I can certainly see a big difference.;)

Very nicely done. This half figure is now produced, on a pedestal, by Terry Warren of Foxwood Miniatures. There will be a pause in production due to a house move. Pete Morton sculpted four busts, three of which I finished in a bronze finish for him (http://www.militarymodelling.com/albums/member_album.asp?a=15116).

Once Terry has production moving again, I hope to paint some of them myself. I also made a number of Roman (and Viking) helmets, shields and weapons for Pete and live in hope of seeing some more of his beautifully sculpted 200mm half and full figures.

Happy New Year,

Mike

Cheers Mike,

Here are a few more pics showing my recent progress. Concentrating on the signum and the helmet at the moment. Will go back to the flesh colours next and do some fine detail and more blending.

Nothing is 100% finished yet, but it's starting to come together.(y)

Hi Tony

good to see you back on the brushes,
and with the paint and cheek guards in place, all looking good.

Like how you have done different variations for the armour, subtle, yet effective.

Welcome to the new year!

Cheers

Hi Chris, thank you for your support mate. I wish I was close to finishing it, but the reality is there's still a huge amount of work to do on this bust.(y)

Hi Jamie, thanks mate. The armour will be my next big job. Lots of small details to add to make it look realistic.:)

FYI, I just cracked 5000 posts here on Planet Figure. Yeh:D
