Hi All,
This project is for my neighbour Debbie (who does not know) whose brother served as a Royal Engineer bomb disposal technician. Sadly she told me he had passed away and had a long battle with P.T.S.D. He served in the Gulf, Afghanistan, Bosnia and many other places.
I finally managed to get a figure from Spain by Black Dog miniatures in 1/35 scale. He is going to be mounted on a walnut base from Pete's bases and I have ordered a bomb disposal lapel pin to put on the front of the base.
I will need some help here as modern soldiers are not my thing. So any help with correct uniform, accoutaments and weapons colours would be greatly appreciated, I have found a few images on the net that look right! But there are two distinctive styles, which one should I be using based on the figure.
I have made made the base, cleaned up the figure and rectified quite a few flaws in the casting and undercoated ready for painting.
cheers
Richie

Good project to start on, Richie, and fine of you to do this for your neighbor. I'm no expert on the modern gear either, but I'll be watching the progress.

Ruck On!

file_7__94399.jpgA great project Richie. One close to my heart too, a lifetime ago I was a Royal Engineer in a high risk search team. My area of ops was NI though. The picture here is the Royal Engineers TRF (Tactical recognition flash) This would either be on the upper arm or the chest rig. As for camouflage that really depends on the era and location you want the figure to be from. Your third picture has a mixture of disruptive pattern material, DPM and desert cam, so would be very early in our sand pit tours. The full desert cam in the fourth picture, would be once the units were fully kitted out a bit later and the sixth picure has Multi terrain pattern, MTP so this would be much more modern times now. The figure you have has the older style SA80 and a mk 6 helmet so your third or fourth pictures would be your best reference. Hope this helps mate. John

Hi John,
Thank you so much mate, a great help. SA80 that must be the new Martini Henry then. The patch is a great bit of detail to add. Thank you for referring to the pictures I know which way to go now.
We're the accoutrements the same colour pattern?
Cheers Richie

Hi Richie.
If they are wearing webbing it was DPM but any body armour / chest kit would likely be the same as the uniform camouflage. Your figure looks to be wearing body armour so either desert cam of MTP, good luck with that in 1/35 by the way! The vallon mine detector is green and you can just see it to the left in your last picture.
cheers John

You're a good man for doing this, best of luck with it. The figure looks like he's wearing the earlier sandy camouflage kit like in the group with the wee Afghan boy. I had that in 2008, by 2010 it was the MTP kit so it really depends on the dates he was there.
All the best,
Scotty.
