Field Marshal The Viscount Montgomery:

"What manner of men are these who wear the maroon red beret? They are firstly all volunteers, and are then toughened by hard physical training. As a result they have that infectious optimism and that offensive eagerness which comes from physical well being. They have jumped from the air and by doing so have conquered fear. Their duty lies in the van of the battle: they are proud of this honour and have never failed in any task. They have the highest standards in all things, whether it be skill in battle or smartness in the execution of all peace time duties. They have shown themselves to be as tenacious and determined in defence as they are courageous in attack. They are, in fact, men apart - every man an Emperor."
We to don't need to aspire mate we inspire :smug:
Steve

I am not your mate. Monty gave the quote in that film in 1947 . There will never be another Full Airborne Assault, Op Market Garden put paid to that. Now you are just Infantrymen, with a penchant for giving displays at Fetes and Public events. You were not even formed untill WW2 , when they asked for volunteers to come forward from existing infantry Regts. Now we go back 350 glorious years, not just as Commandos, although Mountbatten thought that we done it best, and so the role was handed over to us entirely. I need not say any more i rest my case.

Royal Marine surrender kit
This kit is exclusively issued to the Royal Marines, it consists of one white flag, plasty cuffs (enough for 15), hessian blind fold, a aid memoir and comes complete with its own dpm pouch so you can have it atatched to your webbing at all times.

The aid memoir gives the following instructions:

Royal Marines Surrender

Aid Memoir

1 Actions on sighting enemy gun boat, place all weapons on the deck.

2 Calmly raise both hands into the air.

3 Reach into the Royal Marines surrender pouch and withdraw the issue white flag.

4 Then take out the issued plasty cuffs as the enemy wont be expecting the sudden surrender without a fight. last thing we want to do is antagonize them!

5 Blame the female for the navigation error.

6 Once encamped in enemy POW camp use the issue pen & notepad to start recording your experience`s for the big payout from the press on release!

Points to note!

The RM issue flag has been tried and tested in multiple theatres of operations from the Falklands to Iran, it measures 6" X 10" and can easily be seen from at least 1000 metres in open water.

I rest mine

I ain't got a bloody clue what you are on about Steve. You obviously have got too much time on your hands, but you have an hilarious sense of humour, which does help to pass my day,so you see you are doing some good in the world at last. We will have to banish you to Gritveken Island if we get much more frivolity from you, that's where a Royal Marine knocked out a submarine, the only time that it has been done by an Infantryman, you may have read about it whilst sitting around compiling your Dits. I take it you know what a Dit is? If not ask a Sailor, but not one of them female ones, they're Tits, a bit like Paras.

Not my words admittedly but makes the point I think :)

"Firstly the Royal Marines that surrendered in the Falklands (57 in number) were ordered to surrender by the Falklands Governer Rex Hunt, they actually were doing rather well against over 2000 argentines, but in the end Governer Hunt ordered thm to surrender, to avoid more bloodshed. The Paras attack on Goose Green was actually failing, hence the amount of NCO's and officers killed in action, because they had to go up front to rally and get the Paras moving as they were pinned down due to bad tactics, even the CO was killed. And the Paras have not done an operational jump since Suez, so what is the point of having them, when not in Para role they are just normal infantry. In conclusion the Royal Marines were formed in 1664 and that means centuries of fighting all over the world, hence the Globe, unlike the Paras formed only in WW2."

Absolutely right Roger, and I would never dispute that. As a Royal Marine of the old school I've always had enormous respect for the RN, having lived and worked amongst them, despite the Bubbly Bosun always giving short measure to the Royal Marines Mess Deck

Errr okay I have no idea where the phrase "The Paras attack on Goose Green was actually failing, hence the amount of NCO's and officers killed in action, because they had to go up front to rally and get the Paras moving as they were pinned down due to bad tactics, even the CO was killed" came from but it clearly didn't come from anyone actually there at the time not so much bad tactics as facing around 1200 entrenched men plus artillery etc with around 500 blokes in open terrain IF the marines had been there (they weren't) am sure it would have been another glorious chapter in RM history ;) As for no more airborne assaults, pretty much true in the same manner that Britain will never leave the Falklands defence in the hands of the RM again :sneaky:

No matter what the colour of the beret this might be a good time to point out than none of 'em walked, yomped or tabbed anywhere without the Senior Service getting them most of the way in the first place. :D

Roger.
True taxi's never go out of fashion Rog

God yes Rog when we were in NI we always prayed for a FAA heli rather than a crab one in case there was the slightest hint of rain cos the crabs wouldn't come
Steve

At the end of the day, all banter aside, at least we all served, in the best fighting forces that there are around. If you want to feel embarrassment then you only have to look at the Yanks, thank god we are not down to their level yet, but politicians, do Gooders, and the Political Correct Brigade are doing a bloody fine job of trying to achieve it.
