Hi,

What is the best paint for simulating rust? I have Newton & Windsor oil paints and Abdrea's acrylic paint set.

Kind regards.

Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber are both iron oxide based and would be good first choices. I've used them both in that way before and it looks good.

I would suggest something that might be a little unorthodox in the figure world. Bragdon pigments make very finely ground rust pigments that would give you exact rust colours and can be mixed for varying shades/degrees of rust. www.bragdon.com I believe is their site... HTH

Hi Centurion
I've dabbled in armour a bit over the years an always found pastel (chalk) powders are very effective at replicating rust stains. If you use a burnt sienna colour the fine powder creates the texture of real rust on the surface. The secret to using pastels is to dilute them with water and wash them on with a fine tip brush, and allow the pastel-water mix to run naturally down the surface and accumulate in the same way it would on a real vehicle.
If the rust becomes too bright, you can simply wipe it off and start again. Remember that you need to spray Dullcote or some other form of flat clear sealant over the pastel to ensure it sticks to the surface of your model and doesn't blow off or lift off when handling the model.

What kind of rust? ;)

Rust can vary in colour from a lightish sienna colour through the obvious red-browns all the way to something like Burnt Umber and even a violet-looking dark red.

To illustrate how varied rust actually is (and not just simply in colour):

Thank you.

Hi all,

Thank you all very much indeed - very much appreciated. The rust effect was for a 25mm Space Marine. At the moment, I'm painting s group of Black Templar Sword Brethren Squad. I used to paint 90mm figurines, but there getting very expensive for me. The last figurine I purchased cost me well over £60.00. Resin figurines are much cheaper to buy and a lot crisper in detail. Anyway, enough of my rambling, thank you all very much.

Kindest regards.
