I have a pretty good collection of samurai references, so here are some titles you might look for:

There are three excellent references by Dr. Mitsuo Kure, an historian and figure modeller.
1) Samurai: An Illustrated History (ISBN 0-8048-3287-0) features old Japanese artwork, photos of armor and weapons, and photos of re-enactors wearing modern reproductions of samurai armor.

2) The Samurai Recreated in Color Photographs (ISBN 1-86126-335-X) is a collection of photos of re-enactors wearing modern reproduction armor. There are lots of closeups showing details of how the armor is worn, lacing patterns, and surface details of the armor.

3) Samurai: Arms, Armor, Costume (ISBN 978-0-7858-2208-0) shows not only armor, but also the clothing worn under the armor, as well as everyday clothing for both men and women. The reproduction armor and clothing is worn by models shown in several poses so the details of how the items are worn can be seen.

Clothes of Samurai Warriors (ISBN 4-7636-7038-7) has photos of Japanese scrolls as well as photos of original armor and clothing in museum collections. The items shown tend to be more flamboyant ceremonial garments and armor.

Arms and Armor of the Samurai (ISBN 0-517-64467-3) and Japanese Arms and Armor (Crown Publishers, Inc., 1969) are both collections of photographs of samurai arms and armor from museum collections.
