Freedom for Hardingstone!

Seeing as I will always have a piece of my heart firmly planted in Scotland, I've been reading this thread for a while now.
I don't know if this story made much of an impact on your side of the Atlantic, but many of you might be aware, Canada has it's own struggles with dual identity (well, identity in general really) vis a vis Quebec. This past week the good people of Quebec (or les bonnes gens de Québec) had a provincial election which saw their nationalist party soundly defeated. I'm attaching a link to the CBC news political panel talking about what it all means. I wonder what the similarities might be, if any, with the whole referendum debate in Scotland? http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/quebec-election-2014-is-sovereignty-dead-1.2601963

Glen this was given a very small mention on TV news here but only with the result. I think it was used primarily to help defeat the Independence partys over here. Sort of show them where they are going wrong sort of thing. Dont think it will help as the Better Together campaign can only provide rants of doom and gloom but will say nothing about whats in it for Scotland to stay in the UK. They say they will make a statement "later" Tories say the same "later". A pox on their houses!!!!!!!!!!

Isnt it time you came back over, if only for a visit to Euro!

Check my earlier posting. I talked about the PQ and the interesting thing being, Salmond was taking advice from representatives of the PQ on how to run an independence referendum. Hopefully, with the defeat of Marois recently, this is a good indication of what will happen this September.

Cheers Paul. I did read that the two parties were exchanging strategy discussions. Salmond may want to take notes on what not to do. In any case, maybe we've seen the last of referendums here.

One difference in my view is that Quebec does fairly well in Canada and the sovereignty movement is largely emotional. Not sure the same can be said for Scotland. Others will know better.

Collin, Scotland does very well being in the Union. They were given a UK Subsidy of over £800 per person from every man woman and child in England. The figure could well be higher now. That's besides, free tuition fees, free prescriptions, travel concessions, etc that do not apply to the rest of the UK.

Well said Brian, and in the end I think your views will prevail. It just boils down to common sense.

Waterman I think you have been reading the wrong books! The "subsidy" you mention does not come from England, there are a few other countries in the melting pot. Wales. Nothern Ireland and of course Scotland all chip in to the UK treasury to help build the UK subsidy for poor Scotland. The free tuition fees, prescriptions, free travel (for the Elderly) do not apply to the rest of the UK because our (Scotlands) government tend to use money wisely. Let me ask you a question, apart from the oil industry keeping the UK going since 1969 with limited help from the rest of the UK, I know as I worked there. Why does a country that has enough oil to suppost the UK 55 Million people ( Westminster Figures) suddly have a major problem when the figure is spread over 5 Million people (again Westminster figures).
I have to explain that Osborn and Cameron are wasting England for you, not for Scotland. Read the IMF figures and Westminsters future planning. Without Scotland England will shift from a very rich country to 18th in the world. Scotland will stay around 8th.
Strangley I tend to believe the IMF rather than Cameron. All that crap about Labour ruining the the UK (Cameron again) tend to overlook companies like Lehman Bros. Fanny Mae and Freddy Mak to name a few!
These are the people that almost destroyed the Western worl as we know it, not Labour. Osborn promisd the UK would be in credit in 1 year, that was in 2010, we are still in a flatlining problem, depending on house sales to keep the country afloat Cameron desperate to keep the bubble from bursting.
If the bonuses and tax was levied on the banks and bankers we would have a much smaller debt, one that could be managed, making living more realistic for you and every other person in the UK.

I rest my case!

I've just been watching Alex Samon's big speech. Way back in 1991 there were a couple of cartoons about Saddam Hussein, one had him as an egomaniac fly that needed swatting, and in the other one the louder he shouted the smaller he got. How history repeats itself!!

I've listened to the main speeches at the conference and nothing has so far changed my personal position.
I do have to admit Nicola Sturgeons speech yesterday was perhaps short on detail but was delivered with passion and whoever wrote the bit about ' vote YES and RECLAIM THE LABOUR PARTY' has definitely hit the back of the net.
There is no doubt that this will have hit home with a huge number of Scotlands traditionalist Labour supporters. So nicely delivered Nicola......it's just a pity she looks a bit like Herman Munster.

Is there any truth in the rumour that in the privacy of his own closet, Alex Samon likes to wear an exact copy of Napoleon's coronation robes?

Getting a bit sick of this independence ****.Vote no you know what your getting ,vote yes and God knows what we'll get. There lies the problem, nobody knows what we would be getting.
Has anybody stopped to think if Scotland gets independence Cameron and his cohorts would be better of as there would be no anti tory vote to worry about from an independent Scotland.
Don't vote for yourself when the time comes, think of your family and what you'll be giving them in the future.

As the English son of Australian parents (of Irish and Cornish descent), I have always thought that the UK was greater than the sum of its parts, and that all of us would be diminished were the UK to be rent asunder.
