Hello all. I have a 1/10 bust of Ned Kelly, one of Australia's most notorious bushrangers. I am trying to find paints to paint his armor. It was made from steel ploughshares in the late 1800's. Depending on all sorts of conditions, the armor looks slightly rusty, to clean to dark, to a medium color.
I am happy to try any medium, as I use oils, acrylics and enamels.

I tend to use enamels for metallic myself if you want rust run a suitably coloured wash over it especially in seams around rivets etc

My approach would be this.....
Base coat of Vallejo Bronze
Paint on a layer of burnt umber...then thin back with a clean dry brush...drawn gently across the surface (parallel to it)....this will leave the oil in and around the detail....
Dry brush across the top with Vallejo Steel....followed by a lighter steel for hi-lites
If you want 'rust'....the best available solution is 'ModelMates' Rust Effects....IMHO nothing works better...

This may give you a few tips.....scroll down the page.....

So that mix I gave you that I used on my own Kelly bust was not suitable Matt?

I think Ron's mix is a good one, at least a good place to start.....and make your own adjustments to suit your own preference.
