super sculpey FIRM + fimo classic

dear friends,
1) what kind of result i can have mixing the two component? i mean it is more suitable for little detailes like hair etc..?

2) i just have problem with the hoven!! adding super sculpey on a metal face and magic sculpt body, for 15min at 120c° with the gril only superior, ....the metal face melted!!! and the hair became brounish and stil gummy not hard as i was aspecting!!
what is the right position for cooking:

only the inferior gril
superior + inf.
only superior?

If you turn your oven to the temperature that is at or above the melting point of metal it will always be a problem. I would NOT add sculpey to a metal figure as you WILL NOT get as strong a bond as you would with putty. Most importantly with putty you won't have to use the oven. ~Gary

Hi Valerio,

as Gary points out the problem, Fimo is not very suitable for conversions due to the heat needed to cure the material, eventhough I didn't even try it, but same could be the result with resin, at least long, or heavy parts could deform. You could try a heatgun, but IMO wouldn't help much either.
For curing the material you need the appropriate tempreture only - let it reach the 120C empty, then put the figure in, what function you use, doesn't matter.

Hi Valerio,

If you put resin or metal in an oven it will melt or burn if the oven is hot enough. The simple answer is don't use Sculpey (or any polymer clays that need baking to harden) with metal or resin. White metal figures have a relatively low melting point, so never put them in the oven.

Because I started my first bust in resin (Magic Sculpt) and then had to switch to Sculpey when I became allergic to Magic Sculpt, I've decided to start my bust again, and do it entirely in Sculpey.

Unfortunately there doesn;t seem to be any alternative.

so i want understand better all the steps:

1) when the hoven reach the temp of 120c° i swich of the hoven and i put the figure in , or the hoven had to continue to be on for all the time ?
2) ok i understood to use only s.sculpey and not mix with other matherials, or at least i can do the major sculpting with s.sculpey( anathomy..) and after baked it, i can swich on magic and/or duro, for their peculiar consistency for sculpting hair, tissues or wery little detailes who need more consitency....

Hello, Valerio!

As it was mentioned by others you do not use Super sculpey for conversion works. But you can use putty instead like magic sculpt, apoxy puttty etc.

Super sculpey Firm you can mix with other materials, but not with Fimo. I found the mix Super Sculpey (70%) + Super Sculpey Firm (30%) as good one.

Oven: first of all the temperature for Super Sculpey need to be 130-135 C, if ti will be less, this material still half-done forever, if temperature will be more it will burn. The time of exposition depends on the thickness of Sculpey on figure, and usually 10 minutes enough. The figurine need to be on the support and positioned in the manner to prevent the fallen in time of cooking because Super Sculpey become very soft in oven and still soft until cooling-off. The support can be from wood, cork or even ceramic, but not metal or plastic, and it need to cover the figure on the sides for even cooking the whole figure.

the only point i want to clear is if i have to wait the right temperature and turn off the oven and only in that moment leave the figure inside the oven for the planned time , or the oven must be on for all the coiking time?

hey man!
you can mix Fimo and Sculpey no probs! most people use Super Sculpey mix but you could equally go ahead and use Fimo Mix-Quick and SS Firm or any combination you want.

the BEST medium for metal conversion is Duro , also known as Green stuff.
