Very nicely painted Tony. I must say that as well as resembling the real Lawrence he does also look a lot like OToole. The film makers really got that right as there is a definate resemblance between the two men. Either way you have really done this justice. Well done.
John

Thanks again for all your positive comments guys. Yes John, the sculptor (the great Latorre himself) has done a wonderful job of capturing the physical features of the real T.E. Lawrence, and this shines through. The fact that he could also be painted to look like Peter O'Toole from the movie Lawrence of Arabia, is testament to the casting of the actor, although in my humble opinion, this is Lawrence as he was in real life, not the Hollywood Lawrence.

I'm still working on a few of the key details on the robes, and have had some great help from the Curator of the photographic collection at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, who has sent me some stunning hi resolution images of Lawrence's robes that are kept in their collection. Having reviewed these photos, I've chosen not to paint the wedding robes that were shown in the previous photo I posted on this thread, as it actually doesn't match the robes sculpted on this bust (nor does the head dress match either).

In some ways I'm relieved, as the intricate details on the wedding robes would have been a nightmare to paint. The more simple robes depicted in the sculpt are less detailed but still quite ornate and sumptuous, made from woven white silk with gold and silver threads. The key for me will be to make the gold and silver threads look gold and silver without resorting to using metallic paints. If anyone has any advice, suggestions or tips on how to replicate gold and silver thread without the use of metallic, I'm all ears and very keen to listen to your suggestions.

You've done a wonderfull job untill now, Tony. I was in the phase of gathering some good documentation for my bust too, so I watch with great interest your next steps. So kind that the curator of the Ashmolean Museum helped you with good photos. Maybe some NMM colours will work, maybe some acryllic painting with fine pigment as Scale 75. They have two good sets. You have in this tutorial some help for painting the silver:

Have inspiration and good brush!

Thanks so much Nicolae,

I've never felt comfortable with NMM, and I'm not sure it would work on a fine fabric like silk. This is not the sort of bust I want to experiment with a new technique, just in case I make a realm hash of it.

The tutorial on Figure Mentor was superb by the way, thankyou.

I'm toying with the idea of adding a very small amount of Vallejo Old Gold into the Raw Sienna colour I've used to create the pale brown stripes and adding Silver paint to my Pearl White colour for the white stripes. I'd then apply very light horizontal strokes across the pale brown and white stripes on the robes, to represent the gold and silver threads. It's probably overkill and wont show up at all, but I think its worth doing and its worth having a go.

As you can see from the photos attached, the colour of the pale brown (Raw Sienna) stripes on the robes needs to become more yellowy gold and less Raw Sienna, so I'll start on those first.

Absolutely masterful, Tony:happy: You have certainly captured that haunted look that's apparent in many photographs , and you've given us all a masterclass in painting stripes, too.(y)(y)

Alan

Totally agree with Alan! Can't wait to see your next steps.
If possible, I'd like if you'll insist more on the dagger too. A really great project, Tony!
Cheers,
Nicolae

Love to see how the metallics work on the fabrics Tony. Also beautiful job on the reds. Top painting. (y)

Ok Tony, I know its a work in progress, but is it me or is there something off a bit on the eyes? Specifically his left one.

As for what you are thinking on doing with the thread effect, I say go for it. Might just be the ticket. If it don't pan out so what, you tried :).

Whatever the case, Lawrence is looking mighty fine (y)!

And by the way, that base is perfect I think!

Joe

Hi Bob, thanks mate. I cheated a bit and used Tamiya masking tape to get the initial line spacing right and then did everything else freehand.

Thanks Alan, I'm humbled by your comments.

Hi Nicolae, thanks mate. I did a bit more work on the dagger last night and will add a Burnt Umber wash over it once I've completed the shading of the robes.

Hi Nige, as you can see from the photo below, I've painted the gold thread into the robe using a mixture of Vallejo Old Gold, Josonja Raw Sienna and Pearl White. The bust now has a shimmering pearlescent look to it which isn't metallic but has a silky sheen - exactly the effect I was after.

Hi Brian, thanks mate. I'm still not completely satisfied with one or two minor details. The eyes remain a concern. A number of people have observed that they don't appear to be aligned correctly and I'll have to do some touch ups before I'm happy.

Hi Joe, thanks for your feedback on the eyes. Yes, the left eye does appear to be lazy and I'll look to fix it tonight. I'm very happy with the base but there's virtually no space for a plaque.

So, as discussed, I've painted a series of fine horizontal stripes across the pale brown stripes of the robe to simulate the look of gold thread. I've also boosted the highlights on the white stripes on the robe by adding Pearl White. What do you think?

It looks top class, Tony, you get the result desired on textiles too, the dagger is more real.
What to say more, ... where's the camel and Faisal should appear soon, isn't it :)? The character looks so alive, bravo!
Nicolae

The robe is looking great and in a lot of photographs of Lawrence he does have a bit of a turn in his eye, I personally would have made them a lighter shade of blue. I think you've done a great job on a cracking bust. I look forward to seeing the finished article.
Scotty.
