I recently started my first figure sculpt, a roman signifer at the battle of Teutoburger Forrest. I have been researching the clothing and armor he should be wearing and have some questions. First should he have something under his boots/sandals. I find it hard to believe that the Romans would be only wearing their open toed boots(their toes would be freezing!!). Secondly would the Romans have been wearing bracae/trousers at this point? The osprey books I have say that they were introduced around this time, however I am uncertain whether I should include them. I plan on equipping him with a mail shirt ending about mid thigh. And finally is it accurate to depict him with a shield across his back as I plan to have him drawing his sword from his lef hip. Sorry for all the questions. I have tried searching the MedRom forum as suggested by many threads here but I have found it very difficult to navigate

Thanks for any help!
Nick

Hi Nick, please call by again & post your questions - we do have a stack of stuff on Teutowald, Roman dress, Signifers etc. etc. But granted it can be a bit awkward to unlock the treasure chest.

Hope to hear from there soon.

Mike

By the way Nick, here are a couple of recent illustrations from Osprey & Ancient Warfare, both of whom published good reference material on this campaign on it's 2000th anniversary:
