Another project begins whilst my other is on a short break for now.
We have Cona.... Sorry. .. The barbarian from Pegaso 75mm.

This is my first Pegaso. Very nice sculpt and detail!
This is also my second metal mini. First of this scale.
Very first thing I noticed was the weight in hand ofc. After painting only resin minis you certainly notice it. Jeez!

(Vice versa. I guess the folks here who have painted lots of pewter over the years then painted resin felt the same.)

Was a bit weird at first painting but getting used to it.
I wasn't sure if the best thing was to glue him to the base and hold the base when painting but he still felt a bit top heavy and awkward . So holding him by the legs and do them last and his back first.

I put the ass in assembly a bit.
Couldn't quite figure out exactly how the flowing garment part attached. I think it should be a mil or so higher and a touch further round. But I got it in the ballpark knowing I had Milliput up my sleeve.

Definitely going with a scenic base for him.
Moss. I've done some moss effect before and loved it. So mossy jungle/ woodland scene. Which suits the conan vibe. But I just love snow effects too. So it's a tough one lol.

Possibly a painted backdrop. But something that fits the pose. I'll have to choose wisely.
Been studying a bit more the works of Frank Frazetta and Patrick Jones. Hopefully to take inspiration and be a bit bolder to recreate some sort of look like that. Hopefully lol.

I'll be attempting some celtic knot print too as seen on the boxart too.
Welp!!

Some progress shots so far. Long way to go! ...

Great start on the guy who isn't Conan, honest, not at all.
In 75mm metal he will be a hefty chunk to handle.

Looking good so far, Rocco. Nice skin tone gradations.

As for metal vs resin, I go out of my way to avoid metal these days. Not only is it heavier, as you note, but I don't find the casting to be as crisp as what can be found with a quality resin figure. Pegaso is a very fine miniature producer, and I've had my eye on a few of their pieces for quite some time, but since they are cast in white metal I can't bring myself to pull the trigger.

At any rate, I hope you tremendously enjoy painting "Not-Conan." Looks like a very fun subject.

Regards,
Gary

He does seem a bit over dressed for Conan, great work so far, they sparkly shin guards will take some work! :D
Scotty.

Yeah those should be fun.. The shin guards ot to have that dazzle!

Very nice start!!! Conan the Barbariaaan!!!!
Thanks mate.

He is indeed. No disasters yet from holding him a bit awkward. Making it work.

Cheers Gary. Yeah it wouldn't be my first choice. If I like the figure enough ill 'make the exception'. Like this guy lol.

Thanks mate. Much appreciated.

I attempted some celtic knot freehand pattern. Very tricky as expected. Very basic but pretty happy with it. I've spotted a mistake or two and a quick touch-up and I'll be happy enough to move on.
The back is probably the best bit. Typical!
.
How the freehand pattern on the boxart was done I'll quite never know! It's amazing

Cracking start Rocco, I do love the whole Frazzeta aesthetic but so far only done this type of thing in 28mm, then being metal isn't an issue. Going to be interesting seeing this evolve.

Cheers Simon

Yeah it's very cool. I'm not sure it will resemble Frazzeta or Jones in any way. 'One does not simply copy Jones or Frazzeta '

But I'll definitely try be a bit more adventurous with glazing the skin now and see where it takes it.
Can't wait to get started on the groundwork though!

I'm really liking what you have done so far, I like the flesh work a lot.
Thanks buddy! Happy with how it's coming along.
Some more fine tuning to go!

oh boy,a lot of flesh, that is nothing for me (with so much flesh hé ) but this is looking great (y)

Mario
Cheers Mario mate. Yeah alot of sk to get round and keep balanced. It's quite therapeutic though I find. Once you get going that is lol.

Hi Colin

What a muscular fellow ...bit of a Con perhaps ...lol

Nice work on the flesh and well done on the pattern

Be interesting to see what you do for the groundwork

Look forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

Yeah this guys had his porridge
Thanks mate. Glad you are liking it. Base should be fun. Ordered some moss effect stuff to try out. Should be fun! Cheers!

Not a huge amount of progress. Slowly but surely!
But hopefully you can see the direction he's going.
Still a bit more glazing back and forth to go etc.

Faffing.

Then push the highlights on a bit. Finish the face, hair legs Then on to the axes.

I have a particular viewing angle I'm keeping in mind. So it can look a bit odd from certain angles . Tricky finding the an aesthetical balance sort of thing.

Thank you mate. Much appreciated. Could have studied more! But I've maybe pulled some characteristics.
I'm happy with how he's looking.
I actually have another Conan print I'll look forward to doing now going in with a bit more confidence. But this is enough muscles for the time being me thinks
