Completed Critique The Jager

⁹I'll get this started now but won't get much chance to do a great deal until next week as my daughter is getting married on Friday.

This fella came from the multiple builds I started before joining PF, the one that gave rise to the Legionnaire and the Lancer. The initial inspiration came from an illustration by Carl Becker.

Further research was from various illustrations found on line and an old book in my collection.





There are other images I looked at to get details of the bayonet knot, the pack etc.

As I build multiple figures to start with I tend to get to a stage where one takes over, leaving the rest until later.

This is where I got to before work ceased.

The figure needs his backpack detailing, Jagers, or at least some of them, had badgers heads as a decoration. There is a blanket and greatcoat to be strapped to the outer edges of the backpack and some detailing on the uniform. The webbing straps are made as before from the foil on a wine bottle, this is thicker than paper, which I have found is too thin and can disappear as the build progresses.

The rifle started life as a Dragon Kar 98, it had so.e details stripped off and was lengthened by a few millimetres. The additional banding and the sling are post it paper.

Last update for now, the lace and lutzen on collar and cuff are a rather fetching pink post it paper. Small cuff buttons are Magicsculpt secured in place with a tiny bit of PVA glue, the is little to no residue left once it dries so no clean up needed before painting.

I built up the top of the Gen 2 Dragon figures water bottle, no cup top as in the World Wars version. The knot or Hirschfanger-Troddeln attached to the bayonet is more Magicsculpt, as are the marksmanship lanyard and (Just for Kev) the medal.

The badgers head was sculpted using reference from the Jager & Schutzen book and the blanket and greatcoat were added with Magicsculpt.

Next job is a good spraying of car primer gray before I start slapping paint on it.

Yeah I reckon you are right, damn. I've looked at it so many times and not seen that, I even thickened his neck a bit. As my mother would say, "can't see the wood for the trees". Guess I'll be getting the razor sw out, this might end up being the shortest thread ever!

It can be staring you in the face, but it won't register, that's why its good to post progress on here. A different pair of eyes can pick up things
we can easily miss. I've had a couple of things pointed out to me on my thread, for which I'm grateful.

An alternative is to look at the image of your figure in a mirror, the reverse image can help highlight any issues, you may have missed.

Ah, a Mecklenburger! The 17th battalion. The Jäger are my favorite subject in the old German army. What size or scale is your figure, Simon?

Brad, according to the illustrations and the book he is of Regt 14, is that a Mecklenberg Regt or am I making another error here.

The figure is just 1/35th scale, a wee bit smaller than 54mm.

Jäger and Schützen regiments of the Kaiserzeit Army are for me very interesting, though it can take time to get one's head round the various uniform details across the various Kingdoms, the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg etc that made up all these units.
My references would also go with this figure as a Jäger from Mecklenburg, this regiment being numbered the 14th.
Good Luck with the painting up of the figure, especially the field badge for the shako. Look forward to seeing the completed model.

THE JAGER MK II

Just can't get my phone to put the accents on the a in jager and since I'm stuck on my phone as I struggle with a new laptop and Windows &÷×@*% 11 it won't change. Also seen my pics on a larger screen, hells teeth they look terrible that large.

Anyway managed to survive three and a half going on thirteen this afternoon, even managed to hand her back to her mother in a good mood!

So this means I have a little time before wedding tasks get sent my way. The Jagers head came off cleanly sawing around the paper clip pin it was attached with. Of course the paper detail had to be removed which is good because I remade the lutzen a bit better once the head was re-grafted. Also noticed some cuff lace I missed so some good came of my anatomical calamity, well it makes me feel better about it.

It's an improvement in that he no longer resembles a sideshow freak, so hopefully I'll have time tomorrow to at least undercoat him, unless of course some one spots something else I've cooked up on. If I have tell me now before it gets too far along towards painting.

If anything I would look at where the hands join the sleeve ...light gaps

Cheers Kev, will take a look when time permits, this is the trouble or benefit of enlarged pictures. What is apparent in the picture isn't always visible in the 1/35th original,not with my eyes anyway.

Cheers Malc, sorted his neck, the cuff and some lace on the cuff I missed, also did better ends on the great coat wrapped around his pack. All this done in multiple short stints between last minute jobs and panics for the wedding, at this rate I'll gladly give her away!
