Hello Malc: Well, actually Mick isn't too far off!
You know how we silly Yanks like to compete. But
you can find out all about it, see videos of people
playing the game, see videos of the rules, etc. by going
to Google.com and typing in the word Pickleball.
They even have National tournaments each year. A fellow
in the State of Washington came up with the game
in 1965. The game is played indoors and outdoors on a court
that is somewhat smaller than a tennis court, i.e. the
Pickleball court is 20 feet wide. (Outdoors, we play on a tennis
court. The put the pickleball lines on the tennis court in a
different colour. You use a paddle somewhat
larger than a Ping Pong Paddle. The ball is a whiffle
ball, plastic with holes in it. And the idea is to hit the ball
over the net (the net is the same height in the center as the net in
tennis, 34 inches high) One team serves the ball, underhanded,
to the other team, and they try to hit it back staying within the
boundries. Only the serving team can score points, and you go
to 11 points, for a game — you have to win by two pints, i.e. 13 to 11.
The ball does not bounce as high, or as far, or as fast as a tennis ball.
Old folks like me play doubles, so there are two members of both teams.
Since the courts are smaller than a tennis court, and we are playing doubles,
the exercise is more movement left and right rather than running fore and aft.
Just go to Google.com and punch in the word Pickleball. You'll learn
all about it. The game is a great deal of fun, And it is addictive! Rick

Its a bit like a cross between badminton and table tennis. They use a full size court but use paddles instead of rackets and large sized table tennis style balls.

Rick,
Ive just watched the you tube video. Do they employ professional wakeerupers for the spectators. I think pickled egg eating has more going for it. That is if you can go after eating so many pickled eggs

Hi Rick

Pickleball is a game I've not heard of before, please can you enlighten me.

Malc

Just to help Rick out on this it's known in the UK as Soft Tennis . I only found this out a few days ago as I have been trying to find Pickleball clubs in the UK . I've been chatting to Rick for sometime and his enthusiasm for this game has made me want to find a gentle way exercising , how many times a day can you walk the dog . But there aren't that many clubs in the UK yet .
Get well soon Rickster , I'll keep emails short so as not to wear you out ;);) .
all the best

Roger that, Chippy, my friend:

So good of you to chime in here, and explain that fer sure, good buddy,
The Brits are playing this "addictive" game too. Take care, my friend,
and my best wishes to you and your family, The Miami Jayhawk,

Rick

The painting will be all the sweeter when you can pick up a brush again, get well soon:).
Best wishes, Gary.
PS sport is vastly overrated, burn the golf clubs and deflate the balls (y)(y).

Hi Rick!
I wish you a fast recover and all the best sir.
Thank you Jazz for the info.
Cheers,
Pedro.

Hello Gary and Pedro:
Oh my friends, it is so good of you to post here your good
wishes for the old Jayhawker. I'm into my late 70s(78 yrs.) . . . and I only mention
that because you young folks have not had to deal with high cholesterol,
high blood pressure, and a blood count that pushes toward diabetes.
So for me a strict diet and lots of exercise it the way to keep healthy.
My 44 year old daughter, who lives in Phoenix expects her dad to
be around for quite some time. So the physical exercise is very important.
Ha ha hah . . . . you guys got all this to look foward to. But, nevertheless,
I do so appreciate your comments and concern. It means so much to this
old Jayhawker, , , , Rick

Nothing wrong with a Pickled Egg eating contest. I took part in one in a village called Eaglesham years ago. You'd to match each egg with a pint of Guinness, guess what the prize was ...... here's a clue .... they came in a jar of vinegar (y)

Rick,
Wishing you all the best for a speedy recover. At our age we seem to collect Doctors, lots of different ones. Thats one way to meet new friend except they always seem to need a check when we meet:LOL:
Cheers
John

Oh my gosh. . . you guys are too much. . . talk about cheering
up an old fart, ha ha. Oh gee Ron, sleeping is the best sport!!!
I just roared with laughter. And then Del chimes in with
a pint of Guinness for each egg. . . Ha ha ha. And lastly,
John, thank you Mr. Bowery for your kind words. Indeed,
we seem to collect doctors, and each one wants a great deal
of money for their services. I can relate to that. But more importantly,
you fine people of Planet Figure have helped me so much to see
that I am not alone, as none of us are alone. Bless you Jazz, a.k.a.
John Scott, for starting this thread. Ladies and Gentlemen, thank
you for your concern. . . it means a great deal to this old Jayhawker,

Rick

Ok my friend, Gothic Geek. . . indeed, I'd love to taste one
of those pickled eggs. . . and my guess is that Del certainly
would want to as well. Seriously, my friend, over the years
I have admired your work so much. . . you're such an artist
and have such a creative energy. . . Keep that energy going. . .

Jaybird

Get well soon Rick... you have more Cossacks to paint!

You might have to find a less intense sport once you recover... something relaxing like full contact checkers

Try and behave... get back to the paint bench in one piece please
