......I hope we see MORE FLATS from both you and Simon
Dick Jenkins used to trade at Bugle Call , the BFFS are always there.......

If I recall correctly it could well have been one of the Bugle Call shows I got them. I was in IPMS Avon as a braille scale modeller for several years so it would have been there, Torbay or Plymouth.
You will certainly see more from me as I just put small orders in with a couple of different editors (that is a very old school experience).

....Anyway, they are photographed and ready to go, I'll pop them on here if you want or open a separate thread, let me know which is your preference.

Great Simon, I guess a new "Completed" thread or a gallery if there are enough of them?

I don't know what protocol is here. Look forward to seeing them either way.

Been asked to put some of my old flats on the forum, they aren't remotely recent but I hope you all like them.

First up is a bit of a micky take as there was yet another round of defence spending cuts going on.

Can't remember the editor to save my life but it is done in oils and never got framed. I did once get picked up by an enthusiastic expert say that the union flag wasn't in use in the medieval period!!

Cheers Simon

Another tongue in cheek paint job of a Napoleonic era Dutch Lancer.

This one is from a company in France called Quadri Concept and is part of a large range of Napoleonic subjects, painted in oils. Unfortunately I entered this in a local club competition, just for giggles and it got a gold medal, which made me feel rather awkward. That'll teach me.

Cheers Simon

Rob,

what a great set piece beautifully rendered! Western Miniatures had a great set on orientalism.

Hello Simon,

Lovely stuff. Post more of these if you have them!!

Rgds Victor.

Victor, many thanks for looking, yes there are more but will have to get one of my sons to pull them out of the loft and see if they have survived storage.

Cheers Simon

Those are excellent, the Fredricus Rex figures especially, you have a great touch with the shading and details. What size are the first 3? they look pretty big.

I agree that more people should try their hand at painting flats and more pictures would be especially welcome. For some idiotic reason the International Flat Figure Society forum actually blocks guests from viewing images (and then does not respond to membership requests), talk about how not to encourage newcomers into the hobby.

Rob, many thanks, I think I painted better back then than I do now, only used oils to weather vehicles and dioramas these days and it'd be a bit too steep a learning curve to go back to it.

The mounted Knight, the Death Dealers are larger flats around 65 to 75mm and about the same for the Lancer. I preferred the larger ones cos there was more to paint.

Cheers Simon

Thank you Victor, your praise means a lot.
I have spent a few hours on your blog since I decided to try flats again, I hope you are still building scenes.
Do you know what happened to the Western Miniatures editions? I seem to recall this set being one of several that Dick had but I cannot find any trace of them and would like to do some more.

Hi Rob, you can create an account at IFFS forum for free. Most of the content will display to you upon sucesfull registration. The registration should be automaticly confirmed, however I am not sure if that changed since my login many years ago.
In case you are facing difficulties drop the message to active member "Briank" who is time to time around here. Most of the members are pretty old :) however still in painting mood.

Brilliant work Simon and I like your painting style. I like your idea as well to inject some fun into the painting and I love the Red Lancer who looks like a 1970's porn star ...!

The gold was deserved for painting but you have to question the qualifications of the 'experts' who made up the group of judges regarding accuracy.

Great work mate.
Gary.

Rob, as far as I know Western Miniatures are still running with Dicks daughter running things, though a lot of the sets were sold off. Been out of the flats world for so long now I have no idea what's going on.

Cheers Simon

Gary, many thanks. As for the judges, at local shows it's a case of who is available on the day, invariably they have entries of their own so end up judging a category they know little about. Still it's a bit of fun and gets figures out on display.

Cheers Simon

I quite like the red lancer uniform, maybe Boney missed a trick? Well painted and very interesting, something to think about.
