Wow didn't think a few old flats would generate this much interest, thank you all for your kind comments and yes we should lay down a flat challenge, not competition more "get yer flats out for the lads" kind of thing. How does that sound Kev?

Cheers Simon

As I said before it's good to see flats being shown here ....let's hope it continues

ALL please do share flats ...it's another skilled artwork

As for you Simon , liking the off course painting on the first 4 ...Napoleons turning in his grave ....lol

Thanks for the kind words, I'll sort some more of my flats photographed and get it going over the next week, depends when I can get one of my lads into the loft for me. Apart from not being up to climbing I'm really scared of heights, been stuck in the loft trap door before!

Cheers Simon

Thanks Nigel, they are great fun to do. It may well become a major part of my painting going forward, I love the idea of being able to tell a story in the vignette.

Thank you Victor, your praise means a lot.
I have spent a few hours on your blog since I decided to try flats again, I hope you are still building scenes.
Do you know what happened to the Western Miniatures editions? I seem to recall this set being one of several that Dick had but I cannot find any trace of them and would like to do some more.
Hi Rob,
I explored flats because I wanted to build dioramas and encapsulate them in a compact space. I believe that many of his sets were taken over by Brian who posts regularly on the intl flat fig society website. See below for an example.

Thanks guys, it is a completely different aspect of the same hobby to painting round figures. Tools and techniques are the same but the approach is something new. Certainly a fascinating challenge.

@Victor: thanks, I have found Brian's website but it is very sparse and does not appear to be updated. I am trying to get membership of that forum but not able to yet.

Just a few flats painted by myself in oils a few years ago. I’m not sure of the editor, maybe Regina Sonntag. Years ago in BFFS it was quite easy to obtain flats from the prominent German editors and I still have loads of unpainted in the GA ….

Yeah just googled them, now a software company (I think my French was never good), Lepeltier engraved so proper quality. Wonder what happened to the molds because there were all the French Kings and Queens as well.

Sorry Brad but as fesak_j (sorry don't know your name) says ebay is probably your best bet.

Cheers Simon

No sweat, thanks for the info! There was a comment in another thread, suggesting that Quadri Concepts flats were 100 years old, but I wonder if that was misspoken. Or I misunderstood it.

Prost!
Brad

Brad, no that was just an exaggeration, they were active in the 90's and early 2000's, but the engraver Daniel Lepeltier was quite old at that time. So like so many good things it faded away into obscurity, which is a dying shame because they were lovely pieces. I'm sure somebody somewhere still has the molds but since they are engraved in slate they do tend to get worn out after time and each mold is a one off only.

Cheers Simon

Thats one of the good things about flats is that the range is so diverse, all of life almost…Currently working on a Beethoven flat !
Billy

Beethoven, adult standing or young version at the piano? I have seen both in edition catalogues recently. Along with a set of philosophers which made me wonder if a 2D representation of the old Monty Python song was possible, sadly it wasn't (n)
Couldn't find 1 Heidegger let alone 2.
