Ronnie, I think I may have a disc which will help you with the colours. It seems to have all the regiments of the French Army at the time.
Text me your address (or PM) and if I can get out tomorrow I will stick it in the post.

Don

Glad you are repainting it, the first one was Cr......

Thanx for that you little chappie :)

No prob with the colours just the painter :cautious:

You must paint also the regimental number in the saddle pack.

Hi Ron,
A tip I picked up for my Lancer when doing the regimental numbers was to use Slater's plastic letters and numbers. You can get them off ebay in various heights.
I used - Slaters 1102 2mm high lettes and numbers. Type that in and you will find them no problem, cost £3.99 delivered for a pack.

Looking forward to the makeover, I think you will enhance this figure no end and bring it to another level.
cheers
Richie

"I have been to the Musee de L'Armee and the colour of the the dragoons
Habit was almost like green bias on a pool or snooker table and of about the same quality of cloth just like felt."

Sorry Ron, but I must insist. The French green dragon is dark and not live. Please take a look to this coat from Le Musée de l'Armée of a napoleonic dragoon uniform.

Hi Eduardo
I think that picture you posted may be of an Empress Dragoon but not sure.

Here is a picture of a line Dragoon from the same museum .

NOTE ! the jacket is lighter than the saddle cloth but that may be just from a different depot supplier of the time .

Sorry Eduardo
Lost the Picture
So here now.

Note also the pistol holster covers and the absence of the sheepskin, so don't really know if the museum always gets things right .

The picture of the coat I´ve posted is of a line dragoon, 16th regiment, pink facings, the collar is pink too, but not so clear in the pic. Obviously the colors are worn. Is possible see the mark of the belts over the lapels.
Sorry Ron, I can´t see tour photo.

Well, in this photo the green of the jacket is clearly lighter and more vivid.

In any case, all the french sources that I know, Rousselot, Rigo, Detaille, Meissonier, who used as model, real jackets, show the green dragoon darker and not so vivid. Osprey MAA 55, however, describes the color of the coats as, middle-green.

I think we have a little controversy with this.

Not so much controversy but a good debate, there are other anomalies in the picture I posted IE light cavalry gloves instead of gauntlets, leather chin strap
to the helmet .

Nice paintwork Ron. I think it's too bad to strip the old stuff and do it again. The older pieces can show how much progress one has made over the years. Nothing wrong with your original paintjob, I'd say. Looks darn good to me!

Well, whatever. It's your work, and I'm sure the redo will be even nicer!

Cheers,
Adrian

You May just be right there Adrian. " given me some food for thought"

Perhaps just a touch up here and there
and maybe a rebase will liven it up although I think it is held down with six inch nails

Gentlemen,
Concerning the 'true shade of Dragoon Green', I'm reminded what the late great, Col. Elting told about the subject. While looking at an original French Dragoon uniform on a manequin while at the Napoleonic Conference in Memphis years ago, he stated the the French actually had to dye the uniforms first, in yellow then second, in blue (or vice versa) in order to get French Dragoon Green. They apparently (?) lacked a good green dye. One must be mindful that they used vegetable based dyes and not the colorfast dyes of today. I, myself, am as oy yet undecided as to what shade to choose. This reminds me of my recent search for the correct shade of bleu ciel for the 5eme hussards. But that is an entirely different topic. Bon chance!

Perhaps one should also remember that the uniforms are made of various saws and come from different dye.
This can sometimes be arrived at differed in color.

Cheers

Hendryk

Very good point Jay.
The earlier picture Eduardo posted made a very good point as the red dye on the facing colours had washed out to white.

So where do we go from here, somewhere in the middle I suppose :)
