Some more plates, less precise by Aubry, and some pictures of full- dress lancers pre-WW1

The uniform depicted in the first "photo", 'tenue de campagne', is the one still worn in the opening days of WW1! Steve Warrilow had this figure in his 'Fusilier' range, years ago.

Simon, you might consider a trip to the Royal Army Museum in Brussels, it has a wonderful collection of 19th century uniforms and equipment!

cheers,

Pierre

Wow, superb reference thank you very much, I shall print these and add to.my folder of reference work when the figure is done. My youngest is due to start his masters degree at Leuven later this years so I may get the chance as no doubt we will.be visiting him. If I start planting the idea now I might get the opportunity!

Cheers Simon

I have started the underside of the top of the lance cap, I have added a shaped insect pin into the cap to act as the basis for building the hat plume onto. It will hopefully make the plume secure so not even my clumsy fingers can knock it off.

From Leuven 15 minutes by train, 5 minutes to metro station 'Merode' and your standing staring at the Cinquantenaire arch of triumph, the Army museum to your one o'clock, the Autoworld car museum at your 9 o'clock, good beer and decent food all over the city!

So what's your excuse?:)

Cheers Malc, I like the baggy trousers style lots of room for interesting ceases. I am doing all this with good old Magicsculpt, just about the only putty I use these days.

Cheers Simon

That's what I use, but I'm finding it hard to obtain some more, everyone seems to be out of stock. :(

I assume you've tried the usual ones, El Greco and Greenstuff World, give Sylmaster a try they are usually pretty good.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Pierre, this picture reminds me I still have a large moustache to make. I am also looking forward to doing the lance pennon, a pretty unique design to Belgium and while it is in mind I'd best order a base.

Cheers Simon

My pleasure!

In 1896 a new model of pennon was introduced, but without complicating the matter, here you have the different models with the year they were introduced.

If you need details of sabres, water bottles etc, they can be provided too.

Hi, I have just done a search on Ebay re-Magic Sculpt availability. Green Stuff World has 1929 units available!
I normally use good old Milliput and have not tried Magic Sculpt before, what is the difference between the two? I have some conversions coming up and would be interested in other peoples experiences. Thank you in advance.
Cheers,
Paul

Pierre, thank you so much for all this wonderful information, a real treasure trove of information and detail. I am pleased I can do the three tailed pennon but had thought to do the bamboo lance pole as well, mostly because I like making bamboo poles!

I will be posting an addition and update soon.

Cheers Simon

A small amount of progress on the figure, I redid the seams in the back of the Roding breeches as I had them running parallel to the seam at the front. They now meet in the middle just below the dolman hem

I decided that I may as well push my comfort zone whilst doing this figure. So I am adding his mount which he will stand beside, I am practicing horse painting on another Historex horse.

The saddle is a Historex piece that has been trimmed, but that changed the way it sits on the horse. So a lot of filing and cutting later I have it looking about right, the blue is post it paper with superglue and bicarbonate of soda to stiffen it and give me a base to rebuild with Magicsculpt. Still have details to get rid of, some of the shape to change and other details to add. So lots of learning as I go.

Cheers Simon

Never used Milliput, but used MS since it got on the market. Just great stuff and highly recommended.
I use it in pure form for anatomy so I can carve, and blending on figures and use it are a base for groundwork. For clothing I mix it with duro.
