Cheers Malc, it was a good day, met up with Melanie, Dave Buckfield and Kev Jarret were there, also met Merryweather, Paul Handley and Crambonne alm who I've never met before. Had a nice chat with Mick from Micks Micks, how many Micks can you get in one sentence! I might even have persuaded a couple of people to join PF as well.

Cheers Simon

Glad you had a good day, and met up with fellow PF'ers.
Fingers crossed the others sign up.
I hope you managed to pick up some bases.

It would be nice to get more people posting here. Yes I got a couple of nice bases big enough for horses, no chance of you and Gerry cleaning Richard out on a one day show!

Cheers Simon

Well it's finally happened, I have joined the geriatric Brigade, this, arrived on a pallet this morning.

Though it does mean I'll be racing my Granddaughter round the streets on her bike, I may have got older but definitely not wiser or more responsible!

Anyway enough of that, not had chance to do very much recently so I burnt the midnight oil a bit yesterday. I have finished the lancecap, reworked the falling plume, added the piping on the edges and tops, though I used fine fishing line so it's not very visible. I added the chin scales from fine brass wire, they would be too long but getting them to stay in place I have had to live with the additional length. He now has arms that need fleshing out and a hand holding what will be his lance.

The saddle is near completion, just got to add the rest of the edging lace using post it note paper, do some filing and shaping on the rebuilt saddle seat and possibly add a rolled blanket or some such thing poking out from the front hump.

I have even redone the mane to conform to gravity.

All images magically enlarge if you click on them.

Good to see you on Saturday and congratulations on your new wheels. You could use post its to create go faster stripes for it:)
Lovely work on the figures, they really are coming along well.
All the best
Melanie

Hi, yes good to catch up, not sure if I'll be at any more shows before Faversham, if you can, go to that one, no comps but a great show. Once my Granddaughter sees it it will only be a matter of time until it's covered in stickers, no go faster stripe but plenty of glittery unicorns! It seems slow progress with the figure, probably because I decided to add a horse. It'll get there though.

Cheers Simon

I was thinking more along the lines of a silver WWII German helmet with cow horns and a leather vest with Geriatric Chapter on the back, oh and a red tartan blanket to go over my knees.

Managed a few hours at my desk today, the horse isn't far off being done now. I finished the lace trim on the saddle cloth, just need it to dry then apply liquid plastic and again once dry sand it down nice and smooth. The girth strap is on place, need to see what additional detail it needs, also added a Historex portmanteau and the rear saddle horn. The final bit before painting will be adding the stirrups to the saddle.

I have fleshed out the left arm and added creases, so once the putty is dry I can add the cuff detail and consider if he needs any rank adding. I also added the corner protector to the top of the lance cap, difficult to see even slightly oversize, but a sanding stick will soon change that.

Click images to see a larger version. One more arm to do then I can look at the lace and chest braiding.

oils are perfect for horses, though I think I might do more underpainting in acrylics than just a block colour in future and rely on the transparency of oils more.
I agree, oils are best. Last time I did one, I used the old Max Longhurst method of acrylic underpainting, cover in oils and then use a sponge to wipe of the oils. This can create an impression of hair and also allows the acrylic to show through. You then do touch of of the details like shadows, add dapples etc.

I haven't seen anyone do this in a long while......

That's precisely how I used to paint them, swapping the sponge for a wide flat brush though, only issue is I use white spirit from B&Q to thon my oils and it's not giving much sheen on the dried paint, I think a trip to Hobbycraft is in order.

Cheers Simon

Ooh you're really cooking now Simon!
I haven't used oils for a long time but I do remember that white spirit is good if you want a matt finish but turpentine is better for a sheen.
Looking forward to it, I might even break out the oils myself next time I do a horse.......

Turps, maybe but I paint in the dining room I might get banned! I don't think I'd be up to painting a horse in acrylics to be fair so it's got to be oils. They haven't been used in over a decade, some of the tops are a difficult to get off.

Cheers Simon
