Sorry to put a downer on this thread but I do believe that this hobby and many other creative hobbies will become almost none existent once are generation have pass on or in the old folks homes .
It's not that the younger people don't care , it's more a case they are not taught creativity today . At school each week for one afternoon I had Art class , Wood working , Metal work and Technical Drawing as separate lessons . My sons had something called CTD creative design and technology for two hours a week . My grandson gets nothing other than drawing in a few pictures to illustrate some of his work . We only had few TV programs to watch , my sons had programs aimed at them form the time they got home from school until the news hour , my grandson can watch something all day long if he chooses .
And where will a young child ever see a model kit for sale these days to get them interested in the first place , not in the high street where they go to buy their computer games .

Art & creativity will never die because it is in our DNA. That's one of the first thing we did in our caves besides getting some meat and finding some mate to multiply ourselves.
And the more our industrialized society produce crappy stuff made by machines, the more people will search for that unique piece of art, antique furniture, etc.

Alex I agree art and creativity will never die thank god , but I believe it will be done by a much lesser amount of people than it is, even at today's numbers. If today's children are not given the chance to be creative with their hearts and hands, how will they find their way into the fields of creativity such as modelling .

There is one thing which we've all ignored up to this point which will in my opinion see many thousands of new figure painters, young and old, looking to enhance their skills.
That is of course 3d printing, which will revolutionize the hobby in the near future to the point where many people will begin painting figures perhaps for the first time.
Regardless of the fact many figure modellers here can't accept that change will ever occur in the not too distant future, those changes will see an entirely different figure modelling scene than the one we're all now involved in.
It will, in my opinion, create an new interest which will attract entirely new participants of all ages who may only become exposed to figure painting because of their 3D printing experience.

This new technology may not totally replace what we have now but I believe it will attract new people to figure modelling and painting.

Not if 3d printing can be done in colour (complete with shading and varyinging gloss) and I assume this is an eventual certainty.

Sorry

I, for one, have no concerns about our hobby. In my view, there's never been a better time to be a figure modeller. :D

So many great kits, so many talented artists and so much access to historical reference materials, "How To" videos on You Tube and magazines with great colour photos. I suppose I'm a "glass half full" kind of person anyway, but I think we should be grateful for the wonderful opportunities we have at present and not worry about what might be.

People have been predicting the decline of our hobby for as long as it's been around. :arghh:
Eventually they'll be right, but until then, I'll be in my hobby room painting figures if you need me.(y)

Well said Tony, what used to be fun now seems a lot of doom and gloom. Sadly that feeling only hits me when I log on here, but not always :)

There's one easy fix for that situation, Graham.....shouldn't be too hard to work out.

So PF will kill the hobby?;):D "Gra30" - 1,539 likes received so far - well-known producer of fine miniatures - nice guy as I know him....
Cheer up, mate!

It was tongue in cheek mate, you know I do love it here and there are some top people, it's in my blood too much :) Happy new year mate :)
I was actually sculpting and then logged on to read the demise of my profession replaced with 3d-again, not the best incentive, but my own fault for reading it, that's all I meant :)

I wouldn't worry about your profession being replaced any time soon, Graham,....I reckon we'll both be in another place wearing wings and ill fitting white gowns sitting on clouds painting and sculpting figures well before that happens.
Well I will be......you might be somewhere warmer in red with a fetching tail and pitchfork.....:D:whistle:
