Guy's scale leaves reminded me of this..
right from your own yard
this summer we removed a bush from our front yard (don't know what type it was) and lo-behold the root system was gorgeous.. I have a 5 gallon bucket full of these roots!
Exactly Gordy,
The neighbors think I am crazy when I asked them for their old Rose Bushes they dug up. Excellant source too for larger and medium trees. Pine trees I make myself (see mountainmen in Gallery) from dried flowers, turned upside down and placed into a pre-drilled hole in a tapered dowel. I then spray paint them forest green and touch up the trunk with burnt umber acrylic.....hmmm maybe I should take pictures the next time I make them.

TREE-MENDOUS!!
Sorry! couldn't resist!
I took my kids to the woods at the weekend & sent them off to find likely bits & pieces! It did take a while to explain the concept of scale to my 6 year old, but once I'd done an impromptu sketch of a man on his hand he seemed to grasp the idea!!
They didn't find anything quite as good as that (can't have them up-rooting the local nature reserve!) but I have enough moss to last me a long time!
What would you guys use to preserve natural stuff? I know some things don't need it (I've just used a piece of Privet hedge that I've had knocking around for about 15 years - believe it or not!!) but things like moss - for example - tend to brown with age
Cheers
Simon
P.S. I'm glad I'm not the only one with bits of milliput stuck to my knife handle BTW!
