Hi all,

It was November 2009, Telford. Modellers, manufacturers and distributors from all over Europe (and a few from US, Japan) gathered in a giant exhibition centre for what's known as UK's biggest annual model show (on the other hand one of the smallest is that in Bath, where I spent a good few years as an undergrad :))

The Telford show is really one for the armour lovers. But more than a few fantastic entries from the figure modelling community were also displayed. As you might have guessed, the mounted knight and the goat creature from that wonderful fantasy film won out in the competition. But the rest of pics are note-worthy too for various reasons. Pls enjoy!

This is also an excuse for me to again beg for comments and suggestions. I have shed more light, literally, on my latest work under a clear, blue sky, a considerably rare thing in London. I hope this serves to bring out a bit more depth than the previous dim room light allowed. The pictures before really were rubbish for informing my lighting and shadow efforts.

So thanks in advance!

Your eager student
Michael

Good looking stuff. i think you need more warmth in the skin tone and more color on the lips. Get the eyes painted so something will stand out, that always helps me when painting a face.

Post this in the painting forum you will get really good feedback over there.

Thanks for your comment, Mike. By more warmth do you mean... what colour and where please?

I love painting eyes and only save them for the last, when I am completely satisfied with the flesh tone of a face.

Hi Keith,

True. But then again I did say UK's largest, not Europe's. And I made specific that the entries of figure models were only "a few" in relative terms.

I really envy those of you who have been to Euro Militaire. I keep missing it because of my campus preoccuplations. I kind of know which pieces won in 2009 in EM show and I'd love to have been there to photograph these goodies myself.

Rgds

And if any of you winners in the Euro show ever read this, here is my most sincere congratulation to your achievement.

Hello Michael,

Sorry to cause confusion, just to put the record straight, I mentioned Euro because of the figure nuance in your post I wasn't sure if you knew about the existance of this show, hence my comment.
If you can get to it this year you will undoubtedly find the trip to Folkestone well worthwhile with many fellow planeters' in attendance and a great array of figures to mull and enthuse over.
I have been to Telford, the problem here is that it is a 2 day show with very little to hold the attention of figure modellers over the 2 day period if you decide to exhibit. Competing means an overnight stay unless you are lucky enough to live within driving distance (you also have to be a member to compete), I'm sure these aspects mitigate against the show for figure modellers consequently entries are comparatively low..but for plastic modellers it is certainly a great show. After all as the name IPMS implies that is what it is all about...figures are a side show.

Hi Keith,

Actually, in absolute terms, the presence of figures there, painted or not, is no smaller than say, a Bath show. I blew a hole in my wallet that day for figure kits alone.

I will try to get to the Euro show this year.

Thanks for sharing!
Michael
