New year, new paint work and decided to kick start 2019 with a bust of “La Meridiana Miniatures” named “Uomo d’Arme Sforzesco” (https://www.meridianaitalia.com/Pages/prodotto.php?idp=134&idcat=1&idscat=4) which represents a man at arms of the Sforza family (Milan, Italy) in the second half of the XV century.

The primed bust has been sitting on my desk for a long time, but yesterday I started the paint work starting, as usual, from the face. I used the Andrea acrylic colours from their paint set, starting with the brighter base flesh tone, then I added multiple glazes with brighter and darker colours to create lights and shadows. Overall I am pleased of the outcome and for this I have to thanks Vince Venturella and his outstanding glazing tutorial available here
.

The helmet is painted using the fantastic Vallejo Metal Colours (again, thanks to Vince for his review about them) which I discovered are vey easy to work with and create lights and shadows. Visit this link https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/categoria/hobby/metal-color-en if you want to know more about the available colour range. To simulate the dirty around the edges I have also used oil colours with a mix of black and indigo. I also simulated some scratches using a silver printer’s ink.

To paint the feather I have used the Andrea paint set for red, crating multiple shadows and lights. For the extreme lights I also had to add a bit of yellow and white.

Below you can find some photos of the head at the current state.

This time I have also recorded a quick video just to get a 360 degree view of the head. I have uploaded the video in my website where you can find a post (https://luver.it/wp/2019/01/06/uomo-darmi-sforzesco-man-at-arms-wip) with this article but also other photos

That’s all! The next step is be about painting the torso which is going to be quite challenging as I want to paint some heraldry and I still have to decide which one…

Hello, I made some progress in painting my man at arms. Basically I painted the torso which is pretty standard stuff. For the metallic armour I used the Vallejo Metal Color (steel, silver and magnesium) while the cloth was painted using Andrea Ivory and AK Red Emblem (of course I used other colours to make shadows and lights...)
Below you can find some pictures using my iPad (quality is not the best...)
I have also updated by blog with a new post available here https://luver.it/wp/2019/01/13/uomo-darmi-sforzesco-man-at-arms-wip-part-2
The next challenge with this nice bust is the heraldry...
See you next time
Luciano

Hi Luciano

Thanks for the updates ...coming on nicely .....I woukd push the shadows and highs a bit more but that's me !

Ve interested how you do the heraldry and which one you are choosing to show

Looking forward to seeing more

Thanks for the feedback! I did apply some lights and shadows and like you, also I typically push more the contrast, but in this case I though that the fabric does not reflects too much the light so the contrast is generally not much.
Another possible cause is the photo, I have not used a DSLR this time, just an iPad which has a lower dynamic range.
Anyway, I'll try to push a little more
Thanks
Luciano

Hi, another update, I painted the heraldry and it proved to be quite challenging as expected, but overall I am satisfied with the outcome.
Freehand painting is just a matter of practice and I need more, but I am happy. I also tried to increase a bit the contrast of the red coat.

This time I took the pictures with my iPad with a mid blue background (for the final pictures I'll use my DSLR).
I like this background, in comparison to the black one, the contrast is a bit lower, but I think the picture is more "vivid".

The final part will be about the missing piece which is the halberd.
Luciano

Today I painted the halberd and so I completed the bust. For the metal parts I used, as previously, the Vallejo Metal Colors and Andrea and Scale Colors for the wooden shaft.
I hope you like it, this is really a very nice piece to paint, strongly suggested!
Cheers
Luciano
