hi guys
just started this frank miniatures figure and just wondered if the jacket was really such a light blue looked in my don troiani's soldiers of the American revolution book and cant even find a reference to the regiment

Hi Steve, I have just painted the earlier version by Alan Ball and the uniform is Pale Blue....PM me with your E.Mail address and I may be able to send you a picture......Keith

Hello steve, the uniform for the Volontaires etrangeres de La Marine was indeed sky blue .
the coat : Vallejo deep sky blue as a base, add sky blue for lights and last lights add white.
for shadows use the base plus Vallejo blue wash or simply add medium blue to the base.

for the facings ( collar, cuffs, lapels and piping at the pockets) use flat yellow with a dab of flat brown.
Lights add deep yellow and last lights add light yellow, shadows add brown to the base.

Turnbacks: medium gray , lights add white and for shadows add german grey to the base color.
Vest and pants: base, use deck tan, add whi for the lights and german grey for the shadows.

I hope this helps, Yo u have to see wich company of the Volontaires you wish to paint, the first legion had lemon yellow collar and epaulettes, the 2nd had white collar and epaulettes, the 3rd had red collar and epaulettes, all of them had yellow lapels and cuffs.
I hope this helps

This pic is of one of my figs when i just starting to paint, the uniform is of the royal Deux-Ponts regiment, French regiment in French service with the typical sky blue.
Some of the sources say "dark sky blue" others simply describe as a "sky blue" , but i think that the Volontaires etrangeres wore a lighter sky blue.
Anyhow, at the end of the day, the sources are numerous and too vague as of the exact hue,so, i think you will be safe with something along the line of a medium blue to a very light blue.
Best regards
