I've started a new piece and am looking for some good references for Rittermeister Richtoffen's undress uniform. Understand it was "field gray" but some seem to have a bit more green in them.

Hi Herb, WWI feldgrau was not exactly the colour we're used to from the second war (not that it was especially consistent then either!) so I'd recommend working from one or more references. Just knowing it's "greener" than the WWII version isn't specific enough.

It's likely he had his uniforms tailored, so a bit of poetic license on the exact color could be acceptable.

Send a PM to Bonehead (Mike Good) he will have the information for you.
He once (12 years ago) gave me a color mix formula to match Richtoffen's uniform.
It has been too many years for my 54 year old brain to remember the color mix now, but if you get with Mike he can help you.

Nah, Mike will just say: paint it grayish green!

I have never been too anal about such things. I have seen enough examples of "Field Gray" to know that there are no definites here. My suggestion would be to go online and look at examples of genuine uniforms. Militaria houses are a good place to start.

I have used Vallejo Field Gray straight out of the bottle and highly recommend it. Nice color.

This is is very pertinent thread for me as I was yesterday I was able purchase what I consider one "holy grail"s of our hobby, two of Mike Good's DML WWI busts; the Richtoffen bust being one of them.

Funny how these things can happen. I just returned from a show this weekend and purchased the Model Cellar 1/48 scale Richthofen. Timely thread!

I totally, absolutely agree with your statement.
Last year, I sold ALL my "grey army" on e-bay...BUT...kept ALL my "Mike Good" metal & resin collection.

like you said..."holy grail" and I am fortunate to be friends with the "man behind the curtain"...lions, tigers and bears, O! My!

Glad I was able to stir up some stuff.
Mike, What a great figure. Am having a great time with it and hope to do it justice. Will check out the Vallejo color. I work in oils so I will use it al a base for future figures. Have tried to take a little from each thing I have found on the net to come oup with the color I'm using.
One other quick thing. In one of the places I visited, they said that many of the German fliers used what amounted to jockey silk type material for their caps. Any feelings about this one way or the other?

I do not know what to make of this comment. If you are talking about the service cap, they are no different from the ones worn by any of the other services.

And just to get Paul at The Model Cellar all riled up again, here are my latest renditions of the Richthofen Brothers (and Moritz) done in 1/32 (54mm) scale. These are due for release from The Model Cellar, as soon as Paul gets through his end of the year school duties.....
