Gary,

The hairs on the roach were supple yet stiff much like the ones on a well-worn broom. Think 'spiky' (like your avatar ;) ). It would make an interesting contrast with the soft, flowing, droopy ostrich feather.

On the other hand, I have my reservation about the red cloth/recognition sign. It sounds furiously like the 'red headband=US Army scout / white paint stripe= hostile' stories during the Apache wars.

If you admit that one of the main characteristics of guerilla warfare is stealth, it's unlikely that any conspicuous sign (recognition or otherwise) was welcome. It's like asking Viet Cong guerillas to wear a VC sign in dayglo letters on their back.

Just my Saturday morning ravings, of course

At this stage I'm going to call this finished. I have done the roach three times now and feel this is the best of the three. I have some clean up here and there to do, but the major work is complete. French & Indian war period native subjects are a challenge that's for sure. While there are actual artifacts that survive, they are a rare thing. I'm hesitant to rely on art and artifacts of similiar native subjects that are several decades ahead of what I'm doing. Style and construction of adornments can change and you are also opening yourself up to reproducing something that has been conjectured by an artist that does not have the sitter before them. The education continues.

Rear view. The roach is a hard thing to get right. If I were to ever do a one-off I'd use real dyed deer hair for this part. It's really hard to get a natural look to it.

Guys, Thanks for all the kind words, I really do appreciate them. Pending review of the sculpture, the bust is slated for production, with a few possibly being available at EXPO if all goes well. More on this later.~Gary

Absolutely wonderfull!!!! Beautifull bust!
I wish you a long life with good eyesight, 'cause I want to see more like this one!

Oops! I didn't know there was an update on this thread until today! (the main inconvenient of the Workbench system).

Gary, the result is VERY convincing. This is one great bust, full of character and authentic-looking as well. I might be tempted to paint one if I have the time . ;)

CONGRATS! (y) (y)
