Greetings,

You guys are usually so brutally honest about sculpting, casting, quality, etc. of posted figures. A potentially new figure manufacturer wants me to stock this product. It is a 120-mm scale resin figure of Gen Eisenhower.

Paint job is very simplistic, no shading, highlighting, etc. Beyond the paint job I am asking opinions on just the figure. I assume the retail price would be about $60.

Detail looks awfully soft and anatomy seems off. The face is a reasonable facsimile of Ike, but the rest of the figure is not something I would shell out anything for.

Although I'm still a beginner that has just set my foot in the path of figure painting, I would have to agree with Mr. John Long. Especially, considering that it's a 120mm figure, the details look too simplistic. I think $60 would be too much

I too agree with John. I think the sculpting is very 'toy soldier' or perhaps doll house quality, not anywhere close to a figure painters quality so to speak. I'd say save your hard earned money and invest in a line with more potential.

Sorry John. Yes as previously said, it is a good facsimile of Ike. But that's whrere the compliments end really. I am reluctant to slag off something that I've never had a go at (sculpting) but as far as a commercial kit is concerned this is a no-no. It is a great first attempt from somebody, but as others have already said, I don't think anybody would buy this one.
Shame really, as I reckon that hardest thing to do in sculpting is to do an acurate likeness of somebody. The figure has succeded in the hard part. It's just the rest of it sadly lets it down.

Again, no offence, but he does look like he could be an extra in a Wallace and Grommit Animation (Claymation)

$60 is an awful lot for a figure like this

I agree with many of the comments and I think theyre doing you a favour being so honest about this. That is certainly not the norm when it comes to Internet Modelling Forums.

An more detailed figure Ike would be interresting but perhaps with a standing, walking or crouching pose?

Cheers

Hello John,
This is appealing to me but, only in a comedic sense. It has an arts 'n' crafts kind of look to it. I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it.
BTW, I did like Ike.

Hi again,
Your feed back is much appreciated. I suspected I may get the kinds of replies you have posted.
The sculptor is a very nice guy, and I dont look forward to telling him that I will take a pass. He also has an Einstein figure...similar to Ike, the figure bears a good resemblance to Albert (facially), but detail is lacking.
This sculptor may do better with busts.
I may refer him to Chuck Robinson, since he does seem to stock almost every figure in creation!
Thanks again to all.
Regards,
John
PS - To G9, I liked Ike also!

Not really John. How about Ike in a more dynamic pose? I almost expect him to be reading a newspaper with this pose!!

Dear John, what I would do if I were you is to point the scultper in the direction of another who is slightly more acomplshed.
The raw talent is obviously there, or the likeness wouldn't have been acheived in the first place. I reckon, and I'm no sculpter as I say, that the only thing in between them and being an excellent sculpter is merely practice and some coaching off somebody who knows what they're on about.

hope this helps......

I think steering him to busts is a good move. Busts seem to be well suited to personality figures. He seems to have a knack for likenesses. I would let him know in a positive manner that the figure as a full figure would not be marketable in the style presented. A larger scale bust however, would require less uniform detail and allow him to hone the skills to make a full figure.
