Hi guys,

I have a great problem. Usually I paint Napoleonic uniforms but now I'd like to try with some WWII miniatures.
When I use acrylics I can find a lot of different colors already available but .... if I use oils?
How can I create the mixture for the olive drab or the British khaki? And for the other uniforms? Is there someone who can help me?
Many thanks and happy modeling!

Ezio, you need to mix the oil shades for your highlight colour. I don't claim to have every oil colour there is on my pallette, but for Khaki I would mix Yellow Ochre with Naples Yellow Hue for a highlight shade.
For Olive Drab I would mix Olive Green and Naples Yellow Hue.
I'm tellin' you this offhand, as i've not really had to use Khaki or Olive Drab in my paintin' projects.

Regards, Paul.

Ezio:

Paul has you on the right track

For Brown Khaki, I would try a mix a base of Burnt Umber, Titanium White and either Yellow Ochre or Mars Yellow. Shade by adding Burnt Umber, Sepia or Raw Umber to the base and highlight with the addition of Naples Yellow or Titanium White.

For Green Khaki: I would also try the above mixes but with the gradual addition of Sap Green or possibly Olive Green. More green for Olive Drab

I know some believe in mixing your own greens. For example, Vietnam era fatigues - try mixing Indigo, Cadium Yellow and Titanium White. I haven't tried it but I have seen the results. Nice

Hope this helps

Cheers
Paul

Thank you Paul, I mean every Paul of course. I'll try the mixtures and let you know. I understand that each one has his own receipts. The problem is the same also for the acrylics when you do not use the vallejo or andrea colours that offer a wide range and even with them there's a lot of work.
It's difficult to find documentation about this matter because most of modelers use oils for other periods. I remember I read something about in a modeling handbook by Shep Paine some years ago.
Cheers

Ezio.
I mix Raw Umber and Raw Sienna as a base for Khaki then depending on the shade your after try a touch of Sap Green and highlight and blend the highlighted edges with either Mars Yellow / Naples Yellow Hue and a minute dash of flake white on the edge of a highlight blended in .As for Olive you could try Olive Green mixed with Chrome Green Hue and Sap Green. I tend to play with colours until i get a colour i'm after .hope this may help you.
