The one with the unpacked and strapped gas mask seems to me to be correct. There are a bunch of original photos showing "Panzerschreck" gunmen shooting with gas masks ...:






Why? Maybe because of the escaping gases from the rocket-like projectiles when firing...

They used the gas mask prior to the 'shreck being fitted with a shield, the exhaust from the rocket would blow back in their face. After the shield was fitted it was unnecessary. So this guy wouldn't need the gas mask, I'm guessing its a separate part that could be left off?

Or one could just leave the shield off the panzerschreck!
