Same as I was thought in photography and design....our eyes like uneven numbers and triangle, rule of thirds
I tend to visualise in quadrants formed by a saltire.
Usually highest point in upper left then reducing in height clockwise with the low point being in the lower left.
There are certainly merits in having an odd number of figures, not so much a problem with two but four doesn't look great but in 3D this can be compensated by pose and arrangement.

For those of us who are less well educated....."saltire" is also known as 'Saint Andrews Cross'....or to put it simply....a bloody X
