    British Airborne Denison smock question

Chevrons were worn, normally on the right sleeve only, on the Denison. They didn't look like those broad white ones on the model above, but narrower, more subdued in buff on khaki .

Review AK Interactive Book : Real Colors of WW2 - Michigan Toy Soldier Blog

I have the book ,and it's good. The information is interesting, there are masses of original colour photos , and in all it's pretty good summary of all the recent research. The acknowledgements of some of the pioneering work of Zaloga and Starmer are very small, very meagre and in small print...

    58th Foot in Egypt, 1801,in 1/6th scale .

Thanks everyone. Some things , like musket, cap plate and buttons I have in stock , as castings from ones I made earlier. But everything else is made for each figure, and I would guess about fifty hours are involved in making each one. First I make some simple body modifications ( remove head...

    58th Foot in Egypt, 1801,in 1/6th scale .

58th Regiment in Egypt. Here's my latest 1/6th scale figure, and this time I've included more photos, mostly so people cane see the endless reposing possibilities with these large figures The 58th ( Rutland) Regiment had an active role during the Battle of Alexandria, which took place in the...

Questions on painting a union soldier

It's worth remembering , for all blue uniforms before the 20th century, that they were dyed with Indigo. It produces a very dark blue/black colour, that fades very little in use, though all uniforms get dusty and abraded, which tends to make them slightly lighter.Indigo can be used as a...

    the chavalier

This looks very nice, well proportioned and naturally posed. One thing that needs changing ....presuming this figure is intended for the 1620 /40 period, he should have a high collar on his doublet , underneath the linen collar of his shirt. Low collars exposing the neck like this were NEVER...

    British Infantry Drums

I think it's a matter of some discussion when wooden-shelled drums gave way to the the later brass shells: my guess, and it is a guess, is about 1840.The French used them earlier. Wooden ones were certainly usual in the 18c , and perhaps during most of the Napoleonic Wars, they are somewhat...

    Continental Light Infantry

Very nicely done, but surely not Light Infantry , but Light Cavalry ? Boots and a trumpet suggest a mounted soldier.

    Renaissance Town Crier

I beg your pardon, my mistake, it was Gerard ter Borch who was the painter. Here he is... The outfit is typical of mid-17century trumpeters, in the livery coat . The fur hat is unusual, they mostly wore hats.

    Renaissance Town Crier

A very unusual figure, and very nice. It's odd that you describe him as a " Town Crier" , since he's closely based on a cavalry trumpeter in a series of paintings by Pieter de Hooch from the 1660s.Perhaps something got lost in translation. But whatever you call him , very nice.

    1/6th 40th Foot 1794

Gaz, I have a selection of hands I have made, to do various jobs, and they just plug in and out of the wrists. The commercial hands that come with the bodies are pretty good, but they tend to have a visible joint. I used them for some time , before deciding to model my own in Fimo. If you are...

    1/6th 40th Foot 1794

40th Foot 1794 This figure is part of my attempts to make a typical figure for each decade of the British Army’s history. This loopy idea , a dolly per decade, at least gives me something to focus on, and actually has proved so far to be quite a good stimulus to research. The Revolutionary...

    Illegal pirated copies

Sad to say that with large figures and busts this is lucrative and apparently widespread. I really hope out French friends can help here: is there some equivalent of the UK Trading Standards Office, who can certainly help in the UK? But it's also rife in other scales. I make small scale...

Meeting of Officers and Sergeants of the Civic Guard of St .Adrian

OK , understood. They can be very complex ! It's still a great work .

Meeting of Officers and Sergeants of the Civic Guard of St .Adrian

That is truly magnificent, a great work. I have one question : why have you changed the style of the sword hilts, from the originals visible in the painting , to a different and unhistorical pattern? I realise that the original style might be difficult to cast, but for me it spoils the work.

WWI British Uniform Color and Mix?

Thanks Andrew, that's a handy document, if a bit baffling at first. The online colour charts of paint ranges like Humbrol are so wildly inaccurate as to be more or less useless for making matches. However, the Vallejo suggestion that Humbrol 29 is the equivalent of their English Uniform 921 is...

WWI British Uniform Color and Mix?

Don't think there's a direct match. I should mix Humbrol 72 and 155 in about equal proportions, or experiment . But Revell enamel 86 would be a pretty good choice for khaki Service Dress, if you wanted an oil-based alternative.

    Review Pikeman from Altores Studio

Since one of my 1/6th figures appears in the OP, perhaps I might make a couple of remarks. Most illustrators, and regrettably some museum diplays , show the tasset plates with the right one( the wearer's right ) over the left. It should of course be the other way round, since the pikeman...

next from Reedoak 3D printed figures are tropical RAF pilots and mechanics

You are entirely right. They were also worn in some numbers by the BEF in France in 1940. But I only remark on it as a tribute to the beautiful detail you have achieved with these figures.

Norbert , looking at that helmet closely, I believe that you have copied the Mk.I helmet , from the Great War ? It has the same slight downward curvature towards each side.
